This is a permanent full-time position in our Prairies and Territories Assessment and Permitting Team based in the Yellowknife office. Your Opportunity

Stantec’s Prairies and Territories Environmental Services group is currently seeking an Intermediate to Senior Environmental Planner to work with our Assessment and Permitting team. The team operates across Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, and while we embrace our core value that “we are better together”, we do offer flexible work solutions and hybrid work situations.

This position is based in the Stantec Yellowknife office. The Yellowknife office has a vibrant and dynamic environment with unparalleled opportunities for professional growth. With a talented and collaborative team of professionals in Yellowknife and across Canada, we are looking for a motivated professional to round out our dynamic team.

In this role, the successful candidate will provide support to all stages of a project’s lifecycle including assessment, permitting and approval requirements, construction support, and post-construction support. Projects will include small to large-scale provincial and federal environmental assessments for the power and energy, infrastructure, oil and gas, transportation, and mining sectors.

With a working knowledge in federal, provincial, and municipal jurisdictions, you will be joining a multidisciplinary team in Environmental Services at Stantec who works closely with our multidisciplinary teams (e.g., ecosystems, water resources, cultural resources, and site investigation and remediation teams). We are looking for an individual who is highly motivated and accountable, has good attention to detail, has great communication skills who thrives working in a team environment, and a creative thinker with demonstrated problem solving skills and a drive to support clients and internal teams to find solutions. The successful candidate will support projects to meet their regulatory requirements and facilitate the completion of deliverables concerning the regulatory approval processes and compliance.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and assist with environmental impact assessment and permitting projects in Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

  • Collaborate with Stantec colleagues on pursuits and project delivery that involves assessment and permitting.

  • Provide environmental regulatory knowledge and expertise for a wide variety of projects.

  • Assist project teams in the preparation of technical documents that support regulatory application development and submission.

  • Support the identification and assessment of environmental features, constraints, alternatives, potential effects, mitigation measures, and avoidance opportunities.

  • Liaise with local, provincial, and federal agencies regarding permits and approvals.

  • Share knowledge and experience to help develop junior colleagues.

  • Seek out and develop relationships with new and existing clients.

  • Lead quality proposals and projects from inception to completion.

  • Comply with health and safety and quality management processes.

  • Participate in team and independent based work.

  • Take part in on-the-job learning and professional development opportunities.

Your Capabilities and Experience

  • Direct experience leading or supporting environmental assessments and/or permitting of municipal, industrial, or government projects in Northwest Territories, Nunavut, or Yukon.

  • Experience in, or a solid understanding of, the consulting industry in a multidisciplinary environment.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience in project management, including financial, technical, and scheduling aspects.

  • Knowledge of territorial and federal environmental legislation applicable in Northwest Territories and Nunavut is required.

  • Planning and undertaking field/community research programs and/or stakeholder engagement in northern Canada is an asset.

  • Demonstrated strong and effective technical writing and communication skills.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Proven problem-solving skills and innovative thinking.

  • Committed to providing quality deliverables in a timely manner.

  • Ability to work with initiative, professionalism and confidentiality, while multi-tasking and adapting to change in a very dynamic environment.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications.

  • Leadership experience and commitment to Stantec values including inclusion and diversity.

Education and Experience

A Bachelor’s degree in the Sciences, Environmental Studies or relevant Engineering field (e.g., geography, ecology, or energy transition).

A Master’s degree (or master’s degree in progress) is an asset.

Holding or eligibility to obtain a relevant professional designation (e.g., P. Bio, R.P.F., P.Ag, EP, P.Eng) preferred but, not necessary.

A minimum of 8 years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Previous consulting experience preferred.

A valid driver’s license.

A typical office environment includes working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time.

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
