Purpose

 

As a member of the Global Banking and Markets (GBM) Communications team, the Senior Manager, GBM Communications, will play a leading role in internal and external communications for Scotiabank’s GBM business. 

The incumbent will conceptualize, develop, implement, and measure the success of communications while ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are executed and delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures and are aligned to GBM strategy and all-Bank priorities. The ideal candidate will be an outstanding writer and strong project manager, with experience writing in different voices for a range of audiences. 


Key Job Accountabilities 

 

  • Manages the end-to-end process (including conceptualizing and creating the communications strategy, development and delivery/distribution of communications, and measuring success) of internal and external communications for assigned portfolios while ensuring alignment with Global Communications, all-Bank and GBM strategy and priorities.
  • Assists in the development and execution of internal and external communication strategies and tactics, including positioning and key message development, stakeholder analysis, and coordination with other communications partners to advance strategic priorities and drive stakeholder engagement.
  • Supports senior management and business partners by interpreting complex messages and creating targeted communications for various layers of the organization.
  • Supports media relations, developing and executing proactive media strategies driving compelling stories, trains spokespeople, conducts media monitoring and analysis. Manages the reactive media process and supports the issues management process.
  • Manages Global Banking and Markets-wide communications projects and initiatives, and supports planning documents, calendars, trackers, newsletters, and ensures alignment across our channels.
  • Supports a high-performance environment by fostering an inclusive work environment and communicating vision, values, and business strategy.
  • Understands how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

  • Based in Canada but must bring a global mindset to all work. 
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of GBM Communication strategies, applicable to 5,000 employees. 
  • Work with communications and business partners across GBM’s global footprint.
  • Work within a sensitive, highly regulated environment.

 

Qualifications

 

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in communications, journalism or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years working experience in a corporate communications or related industry communications experience in a complex, dynamic, knowledge-based environment.
  • Knowledge of the financial services marketplace with an understanding of Scotiabank’s competitive positioning within those markets.


Skills and Experience:

  • Exceptional written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to create and deliver strategic communications plans that drive engagement across a large employee base and amongst a range of stakeholders.
  • Media relations and issues management experience, with a knowledge of the Canadian financial media landscape. 
  • Experience in seeking, creating, and championing creative communication solutions.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
  • Excellent project management skills with a high-level of accountability for the quality and timely completion of projects.
  • Knowledge and experience communicating via different channels, including print, web, visual media, SharePoint and emerging communication platforms; social media experience an asset – with demonstrated experience in leveraging the latest communication vehicles to effectively communicate to employees.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment, with an ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with meticulous attention to detail and ability balance multiple priorities, meet tight deadlines and work independently.
  • A high degree of comfort in briefing, supporting, and engaging with senior decision-makers or C-suite executives.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain meaningful relationships with colleagues across a range of functions.
  • An ability to solve problems and work in a matrixed environment.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to take on tasks outside of core responsibilities.
  • A commitment to curiosity, and professional and personal growth.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction, but with regular reporting and updates.
  • Discrete ability to recognize and appropriately handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Fluency in a secondary language (Spanish/French) is an asset.
  • Ability to create enthusiasm and foster a team environment.
  • Excellent knowledge of business-related software such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc. Desktop publishing and video experience is an asset.


                                        
Working Conditions

 

Work in a standard office-based environment; non-standard hours are a common occurrence.
