The Team 

 

Global Banking and Markets Engineering (GBME) is the fast-moving, award-winning technology engine that powers Scotiabank’s Corporate, Investment Banking, and Capital Markets businesses. Within GBME, FX, Commodities, Prime Services, Collateral Mgmt. & Funding Technology focuses on key capital markets systems within the products indicated: Foreign Exchange, Commodities, Prime Services, and Collateral Mgmt. & Funding (repurchase agreements)

 

The Role 

 

Commodities Technology is seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to support the team, focusing on the software currency project. This role involves maintaining and upgrading software components approaching end-of-life to ensure stability and compliance.

The successful candidate will have a results-oriented and curious mindset with strong technical skills. You will have strong sense of ownership for system stability and will be responsible for analysing, maintaining and upgrading software components approaching end-of-life. You will have strong technical and dev ops skills with hands on development responsibilities. This role requires hands-on development experience and close collaboration with cross-functional teams, including infrastructure, security, database, and application teams

Is this role right for you? In this role you will:

  • partner with peer engineers and various GBME teams for maintaining and upgrading software components.
  • Work closely with system owners to understand requirements from end of life, compliance standpoint, conduct gap analysis and requirements assessments as needed
  • Be involved in remediating code vulnerabilities (code or library reference), responsible for producing actionable and complete specifications, writing production quality code, and implementation.
  • Design test sets and automate where possible, including functional and non-functional testing, regression testing as well as performance testing
  • Able to work with and refactor legacy code (as needed).
  • Participate in daily stand-ups

 

 

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We’d love to work with you if you have:

 

  • 5 years’ experience with OOP Programming, Java, Enterprise Edition Java - J2EE (Servlets, JDBC, EJB, JSP, JMS), Spring Framework, Spring Boot. Scala language experience is a plus.
  • 3 + years Unix / Shell Scripting (Bash, Perl, Python, etc.)
  • 3 + years in message-oriented middleware such as JMS, Kafka, ActiveMQ, RabbitMQ
  • 3 + years Database development with Oracle, Sybase, PL/SQL etc.
  • Strong experience in enterprise application development and upgrade projects.
  • 3 + years Webservices (Tomcat or Weblogic a plus)
  • Experience with DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, version control system such as Bitbucket, Jenkins, etc.
  • Experience in in-memory data grid technology such as Hazelcast
  • Experience in Apache Airflow
  • A recognized undergraduate degree or diploma in business administration, computer science or related field required.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice to have skills)

 

  • Prior development experience in a capital markets a plus.
  • Prior experience in developing application using SOA architecture
  • Experience with some automated deployment. 
  • Ability to communicate with key technology stakeholders on a daily basis
