The Senior Manager, Model Validation & Approval provides independent and consistent validation and approval of models across a wide range of types, including market risk, credit risk, asset-liability management, liquidity risk, fraud detection, anti-money laundering, and artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).

 

This role is primarily responsible for validating Generative AI, AI Agents, and Agentic AI applications deployed within Scotiabank’s production environment. The Senior Manager will work closely with multiple stakeholders, including Global AI & ML, Data & AI Risk, AI & Ethics Governance, and other teams across the Bank involved in developing, deploying, and governing these applications, ensuring compliance with the Bank’s Model Risk Management Policy (MRMP) and regulatory expectations. In addition, the role will occasionally respond to requests from internal and external auditors, as well as regulators.

 

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:

  • Under the guidance of their manager, develop, maintain, and promote Model Validation Guidelines for Generative AI, AI Agents, and Agentic AI applications, consistent with the Bank’s MRMP and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Support the Director in validating Generative AI, AI Agents, and Agentic AI applications across the enterprise, adhering to the Model Validation Guidelines.
  • Independently manage validation projects or collaborate with team members from various groups within Global Model Risk Management (GMRM); review model documentation, research new methodologies and validation techniques, and design and implement validation test plans.
  • Prepare and deliver reports summarising findings and providing opinions to the VP, GMRM, and/or senior management.
  • Stay abreast of industry and regulatory developments and evolving expectations regarding Generative AI, AI Agents, and Agentic AI applications.

 

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? - We'd love to work with you if you have:

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or above) in quantitative fields such as Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Financial Mathematics, Financial Engineering, or Economics.
  • Strong expertise and practical experience in AI and ML, with a focus on applications in financial services across both financial and non-financial models. Proficient in advanced generative techniques, including Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), Variational Autoencoders (VAEs), Diffusion Models, Flow Matching, and Transformer architectures.
  • Demonstrated expertise in foundation models that power generative AI applications, with a strong focus on their transfer learning capabilities for downstream tasks such as content creation, synthetic data generation, and coding.
  • Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with AI Agents and Agentic AI, including familiarity with frameworks such as Google Agent Development Kit, OpenAI Agents SDK, CrewAI, LangGraph, and Microsoft Agent Framework (considered an asset).
  • Strong conflict management skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with model owners, developers, auditors, and regulators.
  • Candidates with expertise in AI and ML—particularly Generative AI, AI Agents, and Agentic AI—will be the primary focus for this vacancy. Experience and working knowledge across other risk and model types within the department’s current scope, especially the application of AI and ML models in these areas, will be considered an asset.
