The role:

 

Contributes to the overall success of the Real Estate Department, ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives.  Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

 

Is this role right for you? In this role you will:

 

  • Champion a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Be accountable for legally securing and protecting the Bank's real estate positions, both domestically and internationally, through the effective management of legal, business, and administrative risks as defined in negotiated real estate contractual documentation.  This includes leasing as a landlord and as tenant, asset management and property management issues.  
  • Be accountable for evaluating the legal position and business risks associated with all real estate and business related negotiated legal terms to minimize the risks and costs, and to enhance rights and flexibility, including responsibility for resolving the complex details of some of our larger and more diverse and/or difficult real estate contracts.  
  • Be responsible for adding value to the documentation creation, review, enhancement, and execution process by ensuring the agreements reached by department negotiators contemplate maximum flexibility and protection for the Bank's position.  
  • Be required to bring an effective and consistent result to real estate contracts through the provision, maintenance, and evolution of the Real Estate department's negotiation standards.
  • Ensure the timely and effective delivery of service to internal clients, branches, Executive Office departments and subsidiaries. 
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Actively pursue effective and efficient operations of their respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk. 
  • Champion a high performance environment and contributes to an inclusive work environment. 

 

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role?  We’d love to work with you if you have: 

 

  • Lawyer or Senior Law Clerk.
  • Must have at least 10 years of directly relevant experience in real estate and commercial leasing law.  
  • Fluency in Spanish is an asset.
  • Solid influencing and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work flexibly and prioritize in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment.
  • Must have strong communication skills and extensive experience in drafting and negotiating real estate legal documents, to ensure that all of the Bank's interests are adequately protected.
