The Campus Dispatcher will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of the SFU Burnaby campus. This individual is responsible for receiving and responding to emergency and non-emergency calls, providing timely and accurate information to ensure a quick and efficient response. In high-pressure situations, the Campus Dispatcher must remain calm, composed, and focused while dispatching campus security, medical, or emergency teams to incidents, ranging from medical emergencies to safety concerns.
Respond to incoming telephone calls, including emergencies involving medical, fire, police, and other urgent matters.
Operate computer systems and equipment efficiently to complete tasks quickly and accurately under pressure.
Obtain and document critical caller details (e.g., location, nature of emergency, relevant information) to dispatch appropriate responders such as campus security, police, medical, or fire.
Maintain composure in high-pressure situations, providing clear and concise communication to both callers and responders.
Manage non-emergency calls, offering information or directing callers to the proper resources.
Follow established protocols, policies, and legal/safety regulations when handling emergency calls.
Prepare detailed reports on calls and incidents, recording key actions and outcomes.
Support students, faculty, staff, and visitors by providing directions, answering questions, and offering general assistance.
Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to remain calm under pressure.
Sound judgment and critical thinking to prioritize emergencies and dispatch resources effectively.
Accurate data entry with a typing speed of 45–50 wpm (mandatory typing test).
Knowledge of emergency protocols, including providing caller guidance (e.g., first aid, CPR) until responders arrive.
Ability to manage emotionally charged calls with empathy and reassurance.
Skilled at handling multiple phone lines, dispatch systems, and tasks simultaneously.
Team-oriented, working closely with dispatchers, emergency responders, and law enforcement.
Familiarity with the SFU Burnaby Campus and the local area for accurate location details.
Valid Occupational First Aid and BC Security License.
Flexible to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Eligible to work in Canada.
