JOB SUMMARY

You provide dental public health services as mandated under the Ministry of Health - Ontario Public Health Standards (OPHS), Oral Helath Protocol, Health Protection and Promotion Act, College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO) Standards of Practice, Code of Ethics and Guidelines and Dental Hygiene Act. All services are to be delivered in a professional, respectful and non-discriminatory manner. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of 3-year diploma of an accredited Dental Hygiene program

Minimum of 3 years of experience working in a dental office, preferably with clients of different age groups, cultural, economic and social backgrounds 

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Dental Hygienist registered with the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario
Valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated

KNOWLEDGE

  • The theory and practice of dental hygiene
  • Socially funded Dental Programs (Ontario Works,Healthy Smiles Ontario, Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program, Canadian Dental Care Plan, Ontario Disability Support Program, and other socially funded dental programs)
  • Legislative requirements for collection, protection and storage of client records 
  • Dental software such as Abeldent and Dexis
  • Computer software such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, SharePoint..etc.)
  • Medical emergency procedures as outlined by CDHO
  • Interpersonal skill to interact with clients, families, community partners, peers, superiors with tact and professionalism
  • Principles of prevention of oral health diseases and link to overall health
  • Principles of healthy nutrition 
  • Effective counselling, teaching, motivational and coaching techniques
  • Principles of infection prevention and control requirements 
  • Public health concepts including: health status of populations; inequities in health; social determinants of health and illness 
  • Principles of diversity and inclusiveness affecting dental care service 
  • Concepts of client centered, trauma informed and culturally sensitive dental care and services

  • Perform the legislated duties of a dental hygienist with an acceptable degree of quantity and quality in a safe and effective manner
  • Maintains records in accordance with legislations, policy and procedures

  • Supports and collaborates effectively with various schools and community-based staff, children and their parents/guardians and dental professionals
  • Ability to plan yearly screenings and organize schedule
  • Understanding of the different beliefs and value systems of others and respectful of all individuals

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement: Designated Day 1 Ready – immediate requirement for language proficiency: French: oral, reading, writing English: oral, reading, writing Candidates must meet language requirement for position upon hire.       
  • Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3) with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.; Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.  
  • Driver’s License Requirement:  This position requires the successful candidate to use their own transportation.; A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with 0 demerit points accumulated
