Role Responsibilities

Join Alberta’s public health team dedicated to advancing immunization programs that protect communities across the province. We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Nurse Consultant, Immunization to drive the development, implementation, and evaluation of immunization policies and programs that impact the health of Albertans.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Alberta Immunization Policy Development

• Lead the development of Alberta’s immunization policies by reviewing data, conducting research and environmental scans, drafting documents, and developing work plans.
• Engage and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders through working groups to advance provincial immunization recommendations.
• Participate in the design, implementation, and evaluation of all the Alberta immunization programs such as the childhood immunization program.
• Develop policies and guidelines for new and enhanced vaccine programs.
• Provide clinical expertise and clear interpretation of policies to inform stakeholders’ decision-making.
• Lead the creation and maintenance of immunization biological pages (i.e. Policy), including clinical guidelines on vaccines that are provincially funded.
• Collaborate with the Immunization Operations Team and the Public Health Information Systems team members to support program delivery.
• Provide coverage for team members and leadership as needed.
• Working to support strategic policy development through data analysis, research, literature reviews and presentations for the Alberta Advisory Committee on Immunization (AACI).

2. Immunization Regulation

• Provide expert clinical advice for policy development related to immunization regulations.
• Lead engagement with key stakeholders including pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers.
• Offer consultative advice on regulatory requirements.

3. Provincial Surveillance of Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI)

• Co-lead investigations and policy development regarding public safety risks linked to immunization.
• Advise the Chief Medical Officer of Health on AEFI matters.
• Manage vaccine recalls related to safety concerns.
• Innovate surveillance methods to improve monitoring of adverse events.
• Collaborate nationally with the Public Health Agency of Canada on vaccine safety.
• Support provincial immunization analytics through health record systems.

4. Vaccine Storage and Handling

• Participate in developing and implementing vaccine storage and handling policies.
• Provide consultative advice on best practices and regulatory compliance.

5. Pandemic Preparedness

• Support the provincial pandemic plan’s immunization strategies.
• Collaborate on vaccine management and administration during outbreaks or emergencies.
• Co-lead development and implementation of immunization pandemic plans.

6. Project Leadership

• Lead special projects such as information management, communication materials, and scope of practice reviews.

7. Ministerial Support

• Prepare briefing notes, action requests, and respond to public inquiries as needed.

8. Representation

• Represent Alberta Health at federal, provincial, and territorial forums related to Alberta’s immunization programs and polices.

Qualifications

University Degree in Nursing, with a minimum of four (4) years progressively responsible experience in research, policy development and analysis. Must be a regulated member of the appropriate college as required by the Health Professions Act.

Required:

• Current professional registration (e.g., CRNA- College of Registered Nurses of Alberta) in good standing in Alberta
• At least five years working in front-line public health and/or immunization programs.
• Demonstrated experience in project/program planning, development, administration and operation.
• Demonstrated experience requiring strong interpersonal skills and managing relationships.
• Demonstrated experience in strategic planning and critical thinking.
• Strong understanding and practical experience in public health policy and legislation.

Assets: 

• Experience in writing Briefing Notes and public correspondence.
• Experience in policy development.
• Experience in leading and managing projects in the health system.

Notes

This is a full-time position working 36.25 hours per week.

Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary. This competition may be used to fill future roles at the same or lower classifications.
