Develops advanced analytic solutions and methodologies to support the Bank’s Retail and Business Banking credit risk portfolio management and strategies for both US and Canada. This includes developing, testing, monitoring, and maintaining Retail and Business Banking credit models for Adjudication, Account Management, Impaired Provisioning, Collections, Business models (as required), and working with the Credit Risk team and Business Lines to leverage the insights from these models for Risk Management within the bank’s approved risk appetite, support strategies and analytics that enhance business growth, and enhanced Automated Decisioning and optimized Risk-Return and Portfolio Management.
Accountabilities:
Plays a key role interacting and building relationship with internal and external stakeholders and regulators (as needed) in terms of model use, risk control and model risk management. Manages end to end model life cycle of Decision Science Risk models, approving these models and model changes for implementation and use. Ensures the models are integrated into the underlying data and infrastructure seamlessly through time and business/system changes. Interacts with and influences their team, colleagues, and co-workers to develop and implement Retail and Business Banking credit models for Adjudication, Account Management, Impaired Provisioning, Collections, Business models (as required) and tools designed to effectively measure business performance and optimize the risk-return trade-off.
Attracts, builds, and manages (including performance management, compensation, recruiting, mentoring, training, coaching, and career management) a talented and industry leading team of risk professionals with expertise in the highly specialized and quantitative disciplines, including but not limited to credit assessment, account management, risk-return optimization, loss forecasting, financial/statistical modelling, machine learning and automation.
Effectively mentors fellow team members and work closely with business partners in the development, communication, and on-going monitoring and review of Retail and Business Banking risk analytics and strategies, loss estimation and collections methodologies, etc.
Communicates complex risk methodology and analytic concepts effectively with senior level executive, Model Risk, internal and external audit and regulators, as well as team members and business managers.
Develops, communicates, and integrates risk analytics, risk appetite, and risk-return trade-off into all models, for all aspects of the business for Retail and Business Banking.
Maintains up to date knowledge of advanced analytic methodologies and develops creative analysis, directions, and methods to improve Retail and Business Banking portfolio performance.
Pro-actively explores and recommends opportunities to extend the scope and applicability of statistical models or analysis as well as developing new models and advanced analytic solutions to support value added for Retail and Business Banking.
Develops, communicates, implements, reviews, monitors, and reports on Retail and Business Banking credit models for Adjudication, Account Management, Impaired Provisioning, Collections, Business models (as required), including but not limited to ongoing model monitoring, annual reviews / revalidation, and regulatory reporting (as required).
Respond and address Validation, Audit and/or regulatory findings and proactively adjust models to changing portfolios and economic conditions.
Integrates Risk-Adjusted Performance Measurement.
Supports ongoing business initiatives such as portfolio acquisition by providing modeling solutions for the acquired portfolios, or in the case of a portfolio sale, providing impact assessment for the remaining exposures in the portfolio.
Provides modeling requirements for new systems and systems’ conversions.
Adapts models to changing business needs and portfolios strategy.
Conducts impact assessments due to portfolio and model changes.
Plays a key role in supporting the Model Development Repository (MDR) platform and Model Acceleration Platform (MAP).
Drives change and transformation – simplification and automation – for efficiency and effectiveness while ensuring strong governance and controls remain in place.
Within the mandate of this role, promotes and supports the Bank’s risk culture including ensuring employees understand their accountabilities for risk-taking activities, promoting an environment of open communication and effective challenge, and establishing the “tone from the top” through leading by example.

Qualifications:
Masters /PhD level degree in a quantitative field (e.g., statistics, mathematics, economics, finance, operations research, engineering etc.)
Advanced knowledge of credit modeling, with focus on Retail and Business Banking adjudication and account management models, risk-return optimization, and portfolio loss distributions forecasts
Excellent recruiting, coaching and mentoring skills – developing and leading a high-performance team
Demonstrated ability to apply Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques within advanced modelling environments to improve analytical accuracy, operational efficiency, and strategic insight
5+ years managerial experience leading a team of 20 ~ 30 risk professionals that develops quantitative models
10+ years of experience in developing and integrating credit models for retail and business banking loan portfolios
Excellent grasp of the mathematics and statistics of quantifying portfolio loss distributions through short- and long-term timeframe, and through both benign and stressed macroeconomic conditions,
Thorough understanding of how models and advanced analytic solutions can be leveraged to support Model Owners (MO) and Model Users (MU) in measuring the performance of their portfolios, and how these solutions can be used in conjunction with pricing, adjudication, account acquisition, marketing, product and strategy development, and customer management to optimize risk-return.
Thorough understanding of necessary elements of maintaining regulatory compliance
Ability to relate analytical and capital expertise to business problems, formulate business recommendations and communicate effectively to a non-analytical audience
Excellent time and resource management skills, flexibility and resourcefulness to interface and collaborate with internal and external groups
Knowledge and ability to develop and apply financial analysis to business and strategic issues and mentor team members to develop these skills
Excellent communication and presentation skills (both written and verbal)
Effective planning and on-going communication with several layers of management across BMO Financial Group, as well as with internal and external regulators and auditors is an essential part of leading this team.
Please note the base salary range for this position is CAD $175,000.00 to CAD $210,000.00
