Reporting to the Director, Communications and External Relations, this position plays a key role in leading the development of communication strategies focused on keeping employees and the communities we serve informed.  This role manages various communications projects, including the creation of strategic content, and collaborating on complex communication mandates involving several colleagues and activity sectors.

Working in a fast-paced environment, the ideal candidate has a strong understanding of internal and external communications best practices and will champion the key role it plays in the organization. Additionally, they will have experience in audience engagement and consistent messaging development to help maximize employee interest, adoption and understanding. They will also have experience in developing external relations engagement plans, building relationships with key media and health care partners, supporting business activities, reputation, issue management, proactive media relations, and a mix of external communications activities including messaging, social content, press releases and Q&As.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading the development and delivery of internal and external communications strategies and tactics in support of business objectives across Medavie Health Services operations in Newfoundland and Labrador.

  • Providing counsel and leading strategic communications; developing relationships with various business partners and senior leaders across the organization.

  • Leading the development of communications plans for change initiatives and employee engagement / recognition campaigns.

  • Maintaining a big picture view of the organization, issues and/or topics of relevancy to inform strategic thinking and advice about communications.

  • Act as the main point of contact for MHNL media; working in close consultation with business partners to support timely responses to requests for information from media and interviews.

  • Generate and foster relationships with media and health care partners, helping to identify emerging opportunities and challenges that require proactive communication, including new opportunities for enhanced media profile.

  • Develop and deliver effective communication strategies to support business initiatives and other operational announcements; creating relevant materials and liaising directly with internal and external business partners.

  • Developing and reporting on key performance indicators for all communications activities.

  • Lead the development and execution for writing and editing content for communications channels including (but not limited to) (but not limited to) external and internal communications (intranet, website, newsletters, articles, key messages, news releases, speaking remarks, Q&As, social media etc.) and liaising directly with internal and external business partners to obtain relevant detail/input.

  • Developing, delivering, and reporting on our external relations engagement plans.

  • Ensuring internal communication messages are consistent with external messages and, where possible, guide the sharing of messages internally first.

  • Working collaboratively with Medavie communications colleagues to manage Medavie’s brand and reputation, including contributing to social media properties.

Professional Qualifications & Competencies:

  • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive experience in a strategic communications role.

  • Post-secondary education in Communications, Public Relations, or another related field.

  • Proven delivery of internal and external communications strategies in a fast-paced environment with tight timelines.

  • Exceptional written communication skills, including editing, proofreading and diligence.

  • A storyteller with an ability to take complex information and distill into digestible, engaging, informative pieces for employees; ability to modify writing tone and voice.

  • Up-to-date understanding of innovations in communications practices, particularly new platforms/digital channels.

  • Strong understanding of change management theory and practice.

  • Demonstrated ability to advise senior leaders and create approaches that address business demands/needs.

  • Ability to support highly confidential and sensitive subjects/issues in a professional manner.Proven delivery of communications strategies in a fast-paced environment with tight timelines.

  • Experience as a corporate/organizational spokesperson strategies in a fast paced environment

  • Demonstrated ability to advise senior leaders and create approaches that address business demands/needs

  • Ability to support highly confidential and sensitive subjects/issues in a professional manner.

  • Collaborator with a focus on supporting colleagues, trying innovative approaches, and delivering results.

  • Strong interpersonal, project management and relationship-building skills, with an ability to collaborate with various stakeholder teams in a fast-paced environment, across locations and operating companies.

  • An initiative-taker and analytical person who works independently and as part of a geographically dispersed team.

  • Understanding of communications strategies; in the EMS and/or healthcare industry.

  • Flexibility to work outside of normal hours and open to occasional travel.
