The Innovation, Privacy, and Policy (IPP) Division in Technology and Innovation oversees the Alberta Technology and Innovation Strategy, protects personal information, guides the ethical use of data, and manages the Ministry’s policy and legislative coordination and mission planning. We advance strategies and policies for data delivery, content management, and privacy-related programs as well as ensuring responsible governance for Alberta Innovates and the Alberta Enterprise Corporation. Within the IPP Division, the Innovation Ecosystem Branch (IEB) advances Alberta's innovation agenda by setting direction for technology and innovation matters for government, its agencies, industry and academia; investing in research and innovation to build talent, solutions and capacity; and providing direction, oversight and evaluation of Alberta Innovates and the Alberta Enterprise Corporation to ensure their investments enhance growth of the tech and innovation sector. The actions of the Branch align with government priorities such as those identified in the Alberta Technology and Innovation Strategy (ATIS) and are intended to attract talent and expertise, support the next generation of innovators, and attract impactful innovation investments to help diversify the economy and lead to economic and social benefit for all Albertans.

The Innovation Partnerships and Investments unit (IPI) works with internal and external stakeholders to identify gaps and opportunities in the innovation ecosystem with the foresight of implementing programs and initiatives for delivery by system partners and department to better coordinate and strengthen Alberta's innovation, ecosystem development and commercialization efforts. The unit identifies paths for stakeholders/companies in the commercialization and scaleup journey by leveraging networks and programming.  System optimization, ecosystem development and strengthening Alberta's, commercialization efforts by working with key system partners including Government of Alberta agencies, non-profit organizations, industry, and academia are areas of focus for the IPI.

 

Role Responsibilities

The Innovation Ecosystem Branch is looking for a Senior Advisor. This position reports directly to the Manager, Partnerships and Commercialization Supports.

The responsibilities of this role include:
•    Providing support to multiple Government of Alberta cross-ministry initiatives, ensuring deliverables are tracked and met. 
•    Supporting innovation programs and initiatives, delivered by innovation system partners including agencies and other organizations.
•    Preparing briefing notes, funding recommendations, and ministerial correspondence, while representing the team on committees and working groups to influence policy and processes.
•    Contributing to the development of innovation related program and policy products within the department.
•    Leading and managing pre- and post-award grant funding processes, ensuring alignment with legislation, regulations, and organizational goals.
•    Monitoring program accountability by reviewing and approving progress, financial, and outcomes reports, while identifying opportunities for improvement.
•    Liaising with stakeholders to clarify requirements, resolve issues, and operationalize funding decisions to achieve desired outcomes and system impacts.
•    Conducting reviews and analyzing recipient reporting, providing operational support, and contributing to the development of economic development programs.

Qualifications

Requirements:
•    University degree in Business, Commerce, Public Administration, Sciences and Information Technology or a related field supplemented by at least four (4) years of progressively responsible experience.
•    Experience with various Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

Equivalencies:
•    A related two-year diploma and a minimum of six (6) years of related experience; or
•    A related one-year certificate and a minimum of seven (7) years of related experience; or
•    A minimum of eight (8) years of related experience.

Assets:
•    Demonstrated strength in written communication, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly, concisely, and persuasively to diverse audiences.
•    Knowledge of provincial and federal research funding and commercialization supports.
•    Experience with grants management tracking systems such as Microsoft CRM.
•    Some experience with Action Request Tracking Systems (ARTS), peer review platforms, and committee support materials.
•    Experience supporting strategic initiatives with multiple internal and external stakeholders

Term of Employment: Permanent, Full-time position    

Hours of Work: 7.25 hours daily / 36.25 weekly – Monday to Friday
