Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director, Apprenticeship Delivery and Industry Support Services, the Industry & Program Support Advisor position is a key leader within the unit. The position supervises and participates in the activities of a team performing the core function of administering and maintaining the stakeholder engagement mechanism within the branch (My Skilled Trades Network) and overseeing the administration of authorizations for exceptions to the Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Education Act.

The Industry and Program Support position functions within policies, directives, and guidelines developed by Alberta Finance, Treasury Board, and Cabinet, with the relevant act or acts setting parameters and expectations, along with the Ministry and Government business plans.  Other key pieces of legislation and policy that set parameters and expectations for the work of the position include the Government Accountability Act; the Financial Administration Act; Red Seal Policy and Procedures, Provincial and Federal Legislation regarding “duty to accommodate” and regulatory reform initiatives.

The position actions the following tasks as a part of their role:

  • Providing strategic analysis and advice on priorities, projects and other initiatives.
  • Identifying, understanding, and tracking emerging issues and risks, and potential solutions.
  • Overseeing and participating in the operations of the branch as they relate to authorizations as per the Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Education Act and the Designated Trades and Restricted Activities Regulation.
  • Development and analysis of surveys issued to internal and external stakeholders on matters affecting the skilled trades and apprenticeship education in Alberta and across Canada.
  • Providing direction to direct report staff (i.e., recruitment; performance management and development of staff learning plans; ongoing allocation and management of workload).
  • Building collaborative relationships that encourage open and transparent communication about issues.
  • Assessing risks on an ongoing basis to anticipate issues before they arise.

Qualifications

University graduation in a related field plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education
  • Previous supervisory/ team lead experience is required.

Assets:

  • Ability to apply relevant Government and Ministry business plan goals, and priorities related to the Alberta student loan program to the work of the team.
  • Knowledge of relevant enactments Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Education Act and the Designated Trades and Restricted Activities Regulation.
  • Knowledge of preparing briefing materials like Briefing Notes, Powerpoint Presentation, Executive Summaries etc for Senior Management.
  • A Project Management Professional Certificate (PMP) Certification is a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of stakeholder and client management.
  • Knowledge and experience with complex project management processes and standards.
  • Knowledge of business transformation, change management approaches and strategies.
  • Best practices and methodologies in continuous improvement and implementing operational efficiencies particularly in large organizations.

This permanent position is located in Edmonton and works 36.25 hours per week, 8:15am – 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.
