Purpose

 

The Senior Manager, Wealth Credit Structuring is focused on customized commercial credit underwriting (new applications and annual reviews). The role is responsible for contributing to the quality and the profitable growth of the Private Banking customized/commercial credit portfolio by completing credit structuring-related activities for clients including risk analysis, deal structuring, pricing, negotiation and credit presentations for highly complex deals and credit applications. The incumbent interfaces directly with clients at times, in partnership with the Private Banker and liaises with Global Risk Management through the credit decision- making process. The primary focus of the position is the completion of new credit requests, compliance and client Annual Reviews

 

Accountabilities

 

  1. Responsible for the completion of all Private Banking customized/commercial credit structuring activities in the assigned territory/Centre(s) by:

  • Ensuring the timely analysis, structuring and presentation of credit proposals
  • Performing proper due diligence in evaluating information to ensure the critical personal/business elements and fundamental risks are identified and material facts are verified.
  • Providing prompt and sound recommendations in the analysis and presentation of credit proposals
  • Recommending loan pricing and credit-related fees which yield a return commensurate with risk and due regard to profit, administration and competitive considerations
  • Recommending terms, conditions and covenants to provide a viable banking proposal to the client within sound credit lending practices
  • Restructuring marginal proposals into bankable deals where possible
  • Ensuring effective communication with the (Sr.) Private Bankers to clearly convey the rationale for decisions, so that they may respond effectively to clients
  • Providing guidance and counsel to (Sr.) Private Bankers, so that they may better serve clients’ needs.
  • Participating in meetings with customers, proactively identifying credit and other issues
  • Accompanying (Sr.) Private Banker(s) to client meetings to build relationships and obtain relevant information to build an understanding of client’s credit needs

 

 

  1. Managing the ongoing quality of the credit portfolio including the Annual Review process by:

 

  • Advising senior management of any credit weaknesses developing within individual accounts, by ongoing awareness and analysis of relevant financial, legal, political, technological, and industry information
  • Conducting annual reviews of commercial loans and services in an accurate and timely manner
  • Proactively recognizing problem accounts at an early state and taking appropriate action to protect the Bank’s interests including identifying negative trends.
  • Assisting with client restructuring including obtaining additional security or realizing on collateral
  • Adhering to any regulatory and internal Bank policies including compliance requirements, such as Reputational and Suitability Risk
  • Ensuring adherence to the Bank’s Anti-Money Laundering program, Know Your Customer requirements and Guidelines for Business Conduct, by reporting any unusual occurrences or fraudulent activities per established procedures

 

 

  1. Responsible for the accurate communication and effective and timely implementation of the terms and conditions of credit authorization by:

 

  • Reviewing all written authorizations to ensure accuracy, completeness and clarity
  • Promptly following up for acceptance of client offers/ documentation and address any problems, amendments, extensions, reporting to senior management where necessary  
  • Maintaining knowledge of and relationships with specialized area of the Bank which may be of benefit

 

  1. Provide strong team leadership to motivate and develop individual and team performance by:

 

  • Participating actively in team learning and development activities and team performance achievements.
  • Building effective working relationships across the team and with various business line and corporate function contacts
  • Maintaining a high level of customer service
  • Facilitating a culture of open and honest communication.

  • Encouraging the generation of new ideas and approaches.
  • Actively share knowledge and experience to enhance the development of all team members
  • Developing and executing a meaningful employee development plan

 

Education / Experience / Other Information

 

  • 5 years of Commercial / Private banking lending experience dealing with high-net-worth clients and sophisticated financing requirements
  • In-depth knowledge of the Bank’s lending policies, practices and procedures, as well as an awareness of business trends economic, technological, social, legal and political conditions and factors which could affect the viability of a credit
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of financial statements and accounting principles and policies, as well a solid understanding of capital markets instruments
  • Strong verbal and written communication and negotiation skills are essential
  • Expert understanding of the administration of credit, complex loan documentation and security provision requirements
  • A high degree of flexibility is required to adapt to a wide variety of tasks and functions
  • University degree in business, accounting or a related discipline required

 

 

 

Working Conditions

 

The incumbent works in a standard office environment. In order to provide a high level of client service, prompt and timely responses to credit applications are required. The incumbent has no control over the number of applications requiring analysis and adjudication/recommendation at any given time. Non-standard work hours are a regular occurrence.

 

 

 

Pursuant to a language needs assessment conducted by Scotiabank, the successful candidate will be required to be able to communicate in English and  French as they will be required to work closely with other groups from head office who operate primarily in English, and they will serve and English-speaking clientele.
