JOB SUMMARY

The mandate of Water Services is to provide treatment and distribution of a sustainable supply of high-quality drinking water and is committed to protecting the environment by collecting and treating wastewater for the health and prosperity of Ottawa. 

You are responsible for designing, monitoring and/or optimizing numerous assigned processes (including physical, biological and chemical) required for wastewater system operations (i.e. collections or treatment).  You also manage related projects, participate at various internal and external meetings, provide professional expertise and advice to internal and external stakeholders, and prepare various reports.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of 4 year university degree in Civil, Mechanical, Chemical or Environmental Engineering, depending on the unit’s area of expertise

Minimum of 3 years of experience in a process-related environment, ideally in a wastewater system environment 

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO)
Must obtain and maintain Ontario MOE Class 4 Operator Certificate in the applicable process area, within the timeframe determined by the employer

KNOWLEDGE

  • Biological, physical, chemical and other processes used in wastewater treatment or collections operations and maintenance, including knowledge of hydraulics and hydrology
  • Preventative maintenance programs 
  • Statistical process control techniques
  • Computerized process control 
  • Quality management systems
  • Risk assessment and HAZOP
  • Applicable legislation and regulations (e.g. the Environmental Protection Act, the Ontario Water Resource Act)
  • The mandates, roles and responsibilities of provincial government ministries and other external stakeholders  
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing       
  • Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check (Level 2) with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.; Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.  
  • Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
