Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services (MHS) that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) Operations division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth/811 medical communications for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health.

We access all communities in Nova Scotia in a timely and efficient manner with our fleet of more than 180 ambulances and support vehicles operating out of 60+ stations. We respond to 165,000+ calls annually across the province, which are actively managed through the EHS Operations Medical Communications Centre, the hub of all emergency (911) and non-emergency (hospital transfers) medical calls. 

The EHS Operations LifeFlight program provides even greater accessibility by responding to patients on scene or through inter-facility transports by our critical care team via helicopter, fixed wing, or ground ambulance.

In addition, paramedics in Nova Scotia participate in various programs both urban and rural such as community-based paramedic programs, collaborative emergency centres, and emergency preparedness and special operations, to name a few.

Status:                        

  • Open to CPNS registered Advanced Care Paramedics
  • Minimum of (5) years EMS experience with (at minimum) the last (3) years in an active frontline patient care role in a high-volume area.
  • Qualified applicants outside of Central may apply, however consideration will be taken into account for travel time, clinical experience, scheduling and rest time of the applicant.
  • Must be willing to travel to Redstone.

Nature and Scope:

Reporting to the Clinical Team Supervisor, the Clinical Support Paramedic (CSP) is a role within Integrated Health Operations who works in collaboration with Operations and Medical Communications Leadership to provide supportive services. They are responsible for supporting the Medical Communication Centre dispatchers by ensuring that the deployment and resourcing of incidents meet the needs of individual patients, deployment guidelines, and mandates.

The CSP's responsibilities include assessing the health and clinical needs of patients who call 911, providing clinical advice to both internal and external partners, using professional clinical judgment, and collaborating with all levels of clinicians and healthcare facilities within the provincial EHS system for resource allocation. The.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Professional Practice

  • Delivers appropriate patient care within the Paramedic’s scope of practice and employment.
  • Exercises excellent customer service and communication skills at all times.
  • Performs skilled and effective advanced assessments of patients presenting clinical needs through telephone consultation.
  • Apply critical analysis to the combination of complex information during the care process to provide accurate advice.
  • Demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of all communications equipment and ensures professional interaction with all recipients.
  • Participates in the completion of an accurate Electronic Patient Care Record (ePCR) within required time frames. Will complete all other work-related documentation and complete the ePCR when required.
  • Maintains and is accountable for their own professional competencies through participation in continuing education sessions, successful completion of required skills training, and clinical exposure.
  • Ensure ongoing development and maintenance of own knowledge, skills and abilities through self-evaluation, feedback from colleagues and supervisors, and identification of learning needs.
  • Displays capability to make decisions and takes initiative, as needed.
  • Navigation of incidents to the appropriate service or provider both within and outside of EHS.
  • Oversight of incidents assessed by Communication Officers which may benefit from further clinical assessment.
  • Assessment of incidents for alternative & specialist resource responses.
  • To establish and maintain effective working relationships with MCC and Operational colleagues.
  • To work closely with colleagues from MCC and MCCCT to provide a safe and effective triage and treatment response to all patients.
  • Provide clinical support and guidance to meet various staff needs so they can fulfil their operational role.
  • Works strictly on computer and telephone based systems to perform related duties, examples include but not limited to Computer Aid Dispatch (CAD), Mini CAD documentation, LOGIS, among others. 

Risk and Safety

  • Promote a safe working environment by identifying and resolving potential risk issues.
  • Actively implements safety measures to protect self and others from injury.

Leadership

  • Participates actively in the development of peers using methods such as sharing knowledge and resources, providing feedback, preceptoring, role modeling, mentoring, and coaching. Promotes an environment conducive to learning for all new staff members.
  • Function as an ambassador for EHS and Emergency Medical Care Inc.
  • Contribute to the development of the paramedic profession within EHS, EMC INC. and the community through participation and leadership in program, organizational, and professional activities/committees.

Quality Management

  • Support and participate in quality improvement initiatives as directed by the organization.
  • Participate in the review and development of policy, procedures and protocols, as required.
  • Provide the necessary information on the program processes to partners so that it can grow and operate with high efficiency.
  • Participate and support clinical research under the direction of the Medical Directors to develop best practices and evidence-based protocols.

Other Responsibilities

  • Performs routine duties and other similar, comparable, or related duties as may be required or assigned.

Qualification and Requirements:

Education/Experience:

  • Active Advanced Care Paramedic Nova Scotia Registration, competencies, and ability to maintain registration.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience with at least three (3) years in a frontline patient care role in a high-volume area.
  • Must have working knowledge of window-based computer applications and the ability to accurately type at least 30 words per minute.
  • Must have a good clinical record.
  • Must have a good attendance record.

Asset  

  • Current or previous experience as a Clinical Support Paramedic.
  • Current or previous certification as Emergency Medical Dispatcher or CAD knowledge.
  • Previous experience with tele-triage.
  • Completion of a leadership course.
  • Other current and past leadership roles within the organization.
  • Current certification/instructor in ACLS, ATLS, PTLS, PALS.

Knowledge & Skills: 

  • Evidence of a commitment to professional and personal development.
  • Exhibits strong leadership, critical thinking, collaborative, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate well and promote positive interpersonal relationships with patients, families, and other health care professionals in a simplified and easily understandable way.
  • Demonstrate high standards of competence in practices to protect health and safety including clinical governance, infection control and scene safety.
  • Excellent understanding of the EHS CPGs, protocols, and policies.
  • Demonstrated ability for managing competing priorities and prioritizing complex problems.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as a team member.
