What you'll do

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Facilities Manager, with an emphasis on energy and sustainability, you will:

  • Ensure that the general building custodial duties are carried out according to established Nova Scotia Community College standards and guidelines.
  • Provide day-to-day direction and oversight of all duties applicable to facilities staff.
  • Perform periodic inspections.
  • Operate snow removal and grounds keeping tools and equipment.
  • Perform cleaning and maintenance duties.
  • Maintain a customer service-orientated relationship with the users of the facilities and perform other tasks as assigned by the Facilities Manager or designate.

Qualifications and Occupational Experience:

  • The minimum educational qualification for this position is a high school diploma or recognized equivalent (GED) or willingness to attain a high school diploma or GED within the probationary period. Training in WHMIS and Occupational Health and Safety regulations would be considered an asset, as would Standard First Aid and CPR. Ladder training, forklift operator training, and/or Fall Protection training would also be considered an asset.
  • You have a minimum of two years (full-time equivalent) of recent and related experience as a cleaner (including the operation of waxing and polishing machines and automatic scrubbers) combined with a minimum of two years (full-time equivalent) of recent and progressive supervisory experience.
  • Occupational experience that includes working in one or more of the trades (carpentry, plumbing, electrical, etc.) would be considered an asset.
  • You are familiar with and comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, e-mail and Megamation.
  • You have demonstrated experience providing scheduled maintenance duties.

  • Ability to read and interpret the mixes and various uses of chemicals used for cleaning, and to train staff on the proper operation of cleaning equipment including automatic scrubbers and floor polishing machines.
  • Working knowledge of principles and techniques regarding energy and green initiatives.
  • You possess excellent coordination skills specifically related to coordinating services, work schedule and events.
  • You demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence.
  • You are dedicated to life-long learning.
  • You show a strong commitment to community involvement.
  • You are able to perform all physical duties of the job as required for the operation and maintenance of the facilities and operation of small hand tools and shop equipment.
  • Possession of a valid Nova Scotia Driver's License is a bona fide relevant occupational requirement for this position.
