This is a hybrid role, based out of Toronto, that reports into the Director & STO of B2C Data Platforms.  We are looking for a Data Engineer with the focus on Personal and Business Banking division within the bank.

Oversees the development of methods, practices, policies, tools and processes to collect, store, access and use data securely, efficiently, and cost-effectively. Supports the full lifecycle of data assets. Assures the quality of data collection, including the adequacy, accuracy and legitimacy of the data. Identifies ways to manage data across a diverse but unified data tier. Plans and supports the implementation of cloud data management platforms and tools, policies and procedures giving the organization control of business data, both in cloud applications and hybrid cloud/ on-premise set-ups. Manages data integration applying relevant data governance and management practices.

Job responsibilities

  • Provide direction, oversight, and coaching for a team of entry-level to mid-level engineers working on basic to moderately complex tasks.

  • Executes solutions, design, development, and technical troubleshooting with ability to think beyond routine or conventional approaches to build solutions or break down technical problems.

  • Collaborate with data analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders to understand data requirements and translate them into effective technical solutions.

  • Work in an Agile development environment with team members, including Product Owners, DevOps and SRE Engineers.

  • Develop secure, high-quality production code, review and debug code written by others, and drive decisions influencing product design, application functionality, and technical operations.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in one or more areas of focus and actively contribute to the engineering community as an advocate of firmwide frameworks, tools, and practices of the end to end  Development Life Cycle.

  • Influence peers and project decision-makers to consider the use and application of leading-edge technologies.

  • Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies in Data Management, Cloud Technologies.

Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Banking domain knowledge (preferably in Personal and Business Banking)

  • Certification in Cloud Technologies (Preferably in AWS)

  • Formal training or certification on data engineering concepts and 5+ years applied experience.

  • Experience in writing complex SQL queries for analyzing data.

  • Hands-on experience in writing code using AWS Glue/Python/R.

  • Hands-on practical experience delivering system design, application development, testing, and operational stability. 

  • Collaborate with various stakeholders and independently tackle design and functionality challenges with minimal oversight.

  • Proficient in automation and continuous delivery methods.

  • Skilled in resolving code issues and proficient in GitHub for managing repositories and team collaboration.

  • Experience and proficiency across the data lifecycle.

  • Evaluates and reports on access control processes to determine effectiveness of data asset security​ with minimal supervision.

  • Advanced understanding of agile methodologies and Data Security.

  • Bachelor’s degree in data science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, or a related field.

Preferred qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Experience in AWS serverless services including expertise in using AWS Step functions, Lambda , DynamoDB and NoSQL database services 

  • Experience using AWS Lake Formation service.

  • Familiarity with Snowflake/Databricks or other PaaS offerings.

  • Familiarity with metadata management and Data Governance.

Salary:
$75,900.00 - $141,900.00

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
