Justice, Legal Services Division, is responsible for providing quality legal advice to the Government of Alberta. The work is fast-paced and provided in a collaborative team environment. Our lawyers are involved in a wide range of legal work that is challenging, interesting, important, and ever-changing.

 

The Jobs and Immigration Team (J&I) Legal Team provides legal and strategic advice to the departments of  Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration, and Advanced Education (respecting professional governance). It advises on statutory interpretation, policy development, and legislative changes for numerous pieces of legislation regulating Alberta’s workplaces, including labour relations, employment standards, occupational health and safety, and workers’ compensation legislation. J&I Legal Team lawyers also provide legal advice on a wide variety of other matters within the scope of its client departments, including:

  • regulatory enforcement actions under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Employment Standards Code;
  • legal documents such as contracts and statutory instruments; and
  • the development and delivery of jobs and labour market programming, immigration and newcomer settlement, foreign qualifications, labour mobility, professional governance, multiculturalism, and anti-racism policies and programs.

Role Responsibilities

Are you interested in advising on workplace legislation and immigration issues on a collaborative team?

 

Alberta Justice - Legal Services Division - has an opportunity for a lawyer to join the Jobs and Immigration (J&I) Legal Team in Edmonton and be part of an experienced, collaborative group.

 

We are looking for a self-motivated individual who is capable of providing high quality, legal and strategic advice on a variety of matters. This work includes:

 

  • Providing client-focused written and verbal legal and strategic advice to support decision-making on labour relations matters and a wide range of other issues pertaining to workplaces, including policy and program initiatives;
  • Providing legal support to Occupational Health and Safety for regulatory enforcement action under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (e.g., compliance orders, administrative penalties investigation reports);
  • Providing advice on relevant legislation and the development of new or amending legislation;
  • Reviewing and drafting grants and contracts and advising on public sector procurements;
  • Conducting legal research and preparing legal opinions;
  • Analyzing legal and strategic risks and recommending mitigation strategies;
  • Working with other legal teams to coordinate legal advice and services; and
  • Working with clients, including senior government officials, to advance goals.

 

The position will also advise on other legal matters within the scope of the J&I Legal Team as circumstances require.

Qualifications

It is required to have a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (JD) degree.

 

You must be an active member or must have immediate eligibility for full membership with the Law Society of Alberta.

 

For Law degrees obtained outside Canada, proof of accreditation from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) is required.

 

Experience considered:

  • Civil Crown Counsel 2 - Four years to 11 years of related experience.
  • Civil Crown Counsel 3 - more than 11 years of related experience providing legal advice.

Practice experience or expertise in labour relations law is required.

 

As an ideal candidate you are capable of forming robust client relationships and managing complexities in client responsibilities and functions, and you possess:

  • Experience providing strategic legal advice including on large, complex projects;
  • Experience providing advice on the interpretation and application of legislation;
  • Exceptional legal, problem solving, communication and collaboration skills; and
  • Exceptional analytical, research and effective writing skills.

 

Assets:

Seven  or more years of experience in providing related legal advice will be considered an asset. In addition, four or more years of experience providing legal advice in one or more of the following areas will also be considered an asset:

  • Giving advice in unionized workplaces, especially in the area of labour relations;
  • Occupational health and safety;
  • Administrative law, particularly in the context of regulatory investigations;
  • Professional governance;
  • Advising on the development of government legislation, including Acts, regulations, and subordinate legislation; and
  • Providing advice to a public sector entity on grant programs and grant agreements, contracts and/or procurement.

Hours of work: Monday - Friday, 8:15 am - 4:30 pm (36.25/week)

 

Positions Currently available: One Temporary Salaried position (up to two years).
