We are seeking an accomplished leader to own the current Canadian Banking customer systems and oversee the modernization of our mainframe-based platform to a modern, resiliency and scalable architecture. The Director, Engineering will own the end-to-end delivery of the program, ensuring data integrity, operational continuity, excellence and regulatory compliance throughout the transformation.
The director will work across technology engineering, operations, product, and compliance teams to define strategy, manager execution, and lead the change from legacy systems to our future-state platform.
Reporting to the VP, this role plays a key part in translating vision into executable plans and ensuring those plans are delivered with a high level of quality, stability, and stakeholder alignment.
Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:
• Responsible for the successful engineering delivery across Canadian Banking Products Engineering platforms in alignment with strategic priorities, while maintaining stability, scalability, and high performance of critical applications.
• Partners with Canadian Banking business lines, including Digital Product, Client Experience, and Operations teams, to define and deliver robust technical solutions that support a best in class Client experiences
• Executes on the strategic roadmap, ensuring seamless transition from strategy to technical implementation, and fostering continuous feedback loops between engineering and the business.
• Leads and manages end-to-end delivery of engineering of large transformation initiatives, ensuring proper planning, execution, QA, deployment, and ongoing support for all releases.
• Champions a client-focused engineering culture across the team, prioritizing value delivery, customer experience, and the secure, compliant operation of client-facing digital systems.
• Drives engineering excellence by promoting best practices in coding, architecture, AI, DevOps, CI/CD, observability, test automation, and incident response.
• Builds a high-performance team, attracting, developing, and retaining top engineering talent. Fosters an inclusive and collaborative environment where continuous learning and innovation are encouraged.
• Drives platform resiliency and operational readiness, ensuring application reliability through comprehensive monitoring, proactive issue identification, and thorough root cause analysis for incidents.
• Directs day-to-day activities in a manner consistent with the Bank’s risk culture and the relevant risk appetite statement and limits. Communicates the Bank’s risk culture and risk appetite statement throughout their teams
• Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of their respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct
Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:
• Proven experience with customer master data and core banking systems in a regulated financial services environment
• Deep understanding of book of record concepts (ownership of authoritative customer and account data, transaction consistency, data reconciliation)
• Familiarity with financial products (retail banking, lending, deposits, wealth) and their data models
• Hands-on experience with mainframe-based core systems is an asset
• Understanding of batch processing, transaction management and data flows in a legacy environment
• Experience analyzing and mapping legacy data structures to modern data models
• Track record of leading modernization or transformation programs involving core banking or customer master systems is an asset
• Experience in data migration strategies: ETL, real-time replication, reconciliation and phased cutover
• Proven ability to de-risk large-scale cutovers and manage transitional states between systems
• Familiarity with data governance, lineage, and master data management tools
• Familiarity with API-frist, microservices, and event-driven architecture
• Strong communication skills with a proven ability to understand key business and technical concepts, and then effectively communicate these concepts with technical staff, business stakeholders and senior management
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to perform under pressure while managing multiple priorities with competing demands for resources and budget
• Strong analytical, finance & accounting, data processing and problem-solving skills
• Experience in a leadership role with application development, technical architecture, data, and delivery focus
• Experience managing operating budgets and multi-million dollar project budgets while effectively navigating financial constraints to ensure cost efficiency.
• Strong project management skills, able to multi-task and manage concurrent projects
• Experience with vendor product assessment & selection, vendor management & negotiating contractual terms
• Proven ability to deliver platforms and capabilities and managing solutions through the lifecycle
• Significant experience leading complex solution implementations and team sizes ranging from 50 to 100 resources
• Subject area experience with Financial Industry products and services preferred: Retail Banking/Lending, Commercial Banking/Lending, Credit Card Processing and Global Payment Processing
• Subject area experience with anti-money laundering & KYC, compliance, and regulatory requirements (such as AML, CASL, OSFI) is an asset
• Experience with transforming a delivery team to adopt Agile and AI principles is an asset
• Computer Engineering / Applied Science / Technology, or relevant work experience
• 10+ years of Software Engineering experience
• 10+ years of progressively increasing leadership experience in Information Technology management data, platform, and system(s) management
