The Court of King’s Bench is the Superior Trial Court for the Province, hearing trials in civil and criminal matters and appeals from decisions of the Court of Justice.

Role Responsibilities

The Court of King’s Bench is the Superior Trial Court for the Province, hearing family, civil and criminal matters and appeals from decisions of the Court of Justice.

As a Review Officer you will be reporting to the Executive Legal Counsel/Director of the Court of King’s Bench and will be responsible to:

  1. Preside over quasi-judicial review and assessment hearings for the Court of King's Bench.
  2. Hear and consider evidence and render decisions relating to fee disputes between solicitors and their clients (Review) or plaintiffs and defendants in relation to contested court costs and disbursements (Assessment). 
  3. Hear disputes between solicitors over the apportioning of contingency fees charged to clients. 
  4. Track, report and update statistics in relation to hearings as well as procedures relating to the position.
  5. Render decisions that are binding and can carry significant consequences. There is no jurisdictional cap or limit to fee or court costs disputes that can be heard. Decisions are final, subject only to appeal to the Court of King's Bench, and very occasionally, to the Court of Appeal. 
  6. Provide specialized legal advice and support related to all Review and Assessment procedures and practices. 
  7. Provide formal leadership to an administrative support position. You will also provide informal guidance and expertise regarding Review and Assessment processes to other legal professionals and the general public.

Qualifications

A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) Degree supplemented with the following:

  • Civil Crown Counsel 3 (CCC3) must have a minimum of eleven (11) years directly related post bar legal experience. 
  • Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta or eligibility for membership is required.

7.25 hours / 36.25 hours a week.

Term of Employment:
This is a permanent fulltime position.
