Role Responsibilities

Join our team to contribute to national environmental monitoring agreements and provide scientific expertise to enhance oil sands monitoring (OSM).

As a Science Advisor, you will play a crucial role in designing and improving cumulative effects assessment programs. You'll collaborate with internal and external experts, integrate scientific knowledge, and create conceptual models to evaluate environmental conditions and anthropogenic stressors. Additionally, you'll contribute to research and monitoring projects, evaluate plans, and support the development of high-functioning teams. Your expertise will enable the evaluation and reporting of oil sands monitoring data, communicating major observations and conclusions to diverse audiences.

Collaboration and interaction are key aspects of this role. As a Science Advisor, you will have frequent interactions with various stakeholders, including:

• Collaborating with the Science Program Manager to discuss strategic and operational matters, establish performance agreements, and prioritize planning.
• Providing scientific input to the leadership team on varied environmental related issues and assist in setting organizational priorities.
• Engage with scientists and other branch staff, including experts in various environmental disciplines, to provide scientific leadership, advice on data strategies, and integrate Indigenous Knowledge.
• Interact with scientists and other government departments, Indigenous community members, and external stakeholders to provide scientific information, leadership, and collaboration for integrated reporting and knowledge translation efforts.

In this role, your ability to work with diverse stakeholders and effectively communicate scientific information will be crucial to success.

Qualifications

Requirements

Education:
PhD in environmental science or a related field (e.g., biology, geochemistry,  hydrology, hydrogeology, or ecology).

Experience:
2 years of post-doctoral or equivalent work experience in the synthesis and reporting of multi-disciplinary science programs and knowledge translation.

Equivalency:
Master’s degree in a related field plus 4 years related experience or University graduation in a related field plus 6 years related experience.

Assets:

• Preference will be given to those with demonstrated experience in water quality, biology, geochemistry, hydrology, hydrogeology, or ecology.
• Knowledge in Alberta's acts, regulations and policies and frameworks related to environment and cumulative effects.
• Demonstrated strong data synthesis, analysis and interpretation skills of large environmental data sets, including data from the OSM Program monitoring and science programs.
• A record of peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals.

Notes

This is a full-time, permanent position based in Calgary, Alberta, working 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday. The role involves a combination of office-based work, virtual collaboration, and occasional travel within Alberta and across Canada to support meetings, workshops, and field-related activities. The position requires a balance of independent analysis and team-based collaboration, often managing multiple priorities and deadlines. Participation in scientific workshops, stakeholder engagements, and public communication efforts is also expected as part of the integrated environmental reporting responsibilities.
