JOB SUMMARY

Transit Service Planning is responsible for service and operations planning for bus, rail and Para Transpo services (including route planning, bus stop planning, service frequency, scheduling, and bus type assignment), capital and operating budgeting for the department, transit fare policy, performance reporting, development of policies and long-range plans, establishment of service standards and design standards, delivery of the City’s transit priority program, and continuous improvement for departmental operations.

You are responsible for performing a wide range of activities that support Transit Planning initiatives. You may be required to perform any or all of the following: 

  • conducting assessments of existing scheduled transit services to determine if services achieve service design guidelines;
  • conducting the annual service performance review;
  • developing detailed service specifications;
  • coordinating and conducting surveys and data collection;
  • managing all data and ensuring data integrity;
  • coordinating information on construction or other work affecting the Transitway and the greater  transit system;
  • participating in special projects/studies covering a wide variety of operational and corporate subject matters; and
  • responding to customer enquiries, representing the branch at external meetings and participating in special projects as assigned.        

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of 4 year university degree in geography, urban planning, engineering, operations research, economics or similar field.

Minimum of 2 years of experience in transit service planning that includes experience using data analysis software and programs.

KNOWLEDGE

  • Understanding of issues and principles involved in the provision of public transit in Ottawa, such as accessibility issues, local government structure and land-use planning process
  • Knowledge of transit planning and scheduling principles
  • Knowledge of survey and analysis techniques
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers

  • Able to work independently with minimum supervision and collaboratively with all staff as part of a team
  • Possess organizational skills and flexibility to plan, organize and prioritize own work and to deal effectively with multiple demands, conflicting priorities, pressures and deadlines
  • Possess strong analytical skills to investigate problems
  • Able to interpret/analyze/evaluate large volumes of data, to make decisions and formulate recommendations
  • Possess computer literacy in MS Office Suite in a Windows environment, including use of the intra/Internet
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrate ability to write clear and concise correspondence and reports
  • Possess strong presentation abilities
  • Able to learn or master the use of transit related software (i.e. Hastus, MAP, APC)
  • Thorough and attentive to detail
  • Able to demonstrate sound judgement
  • Flexible and adaptable to deal with shifting priorities
  • Possess a work record of good attendance and job performance
