Defence Construction Canada (DCC) is seeking an Editor/Writer to join our evolving Communications team—a collaborative and ambitious group that values professionalism, teamwork, and personal growth. In this role, you will uphold DCC’s editorial standards and play a key part in shaping our organizational voice and values.

Location: Hybrid work environment; 2 days a week in the office or 100% remote

What you bring
You have an established portfolio showcasing your editing and writing work for a variety of formats, such as reports, web content and executive memos and briefings. Your expertise includes every stage of editing—from structural and stylistic editing to copy-editing, proofreading, and fact-checking—to guarantee clarity, accuracy, and consistency in every piece you review. You are adept at transforming complex material into plain language, tailoring your approach for different audiences and communications channels. Deeply knowledgeable about language, style, and best practices—especially Government of Canada standards—you collaborate well with clients and colleagues and act as a trusted advisor on issues related to DCC’s editorial style guide and lexicon.

Your opportunity and responsibilities
Working closely with the Team Leader, Communications and colleagues on the Communications team, you will provide professional editing and fact-checking services to ensure the clarity, accuracy, and consistency of DCC’s corporate editorial, reporting, and digital content. In this role, you will write and edit plain-language copy for corporate reports, executive speaking notes, internal and external newsletters, job profiles, web and intranet content, and other communications products. You will adapt tone and style to suit various content types and audiences, ensuring that all content is engaging and aligned with the corporate voice. As steward of the corporate style guide and lexicon, you will maintain and evolve corporate language standards.

Your skills, experience, and fit

  • Minimum: university degree or college diploma in English, journalism, communications, or a related field, with at least four years of relevant experience—or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong editorial judgment, an unyielding eye for detail, and exceptional writing skills.
  • Comprehensive understanding of language, style, and communications standards, particularly those adopted by the Government of Canada.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office, project management principles, and communications best practices.
  • Excellent fact-checking, structural and stylistic editing, copy-editing, and proofreading to ensure clarity, accuracy, and consistency.
  • A collaborative approach that makes you a valued partner for colleagues and clients, including senior leadership, as you help uphold DCC’s editorial style guide and lexicon.
  • Membership in a professional association such as Editors Canada is preferred.

To begin a career with Defence Construction Canada (DCC), you must be a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.  As a condition of employment with DCC, a minimum reliability security status clearance is required and some roles may require secret security status clearance.

DCC is responsible for the Personnel Security Clearance process. Typically to be eligible for a "Reliability" clearance, you must have five years of verifiable background information and to be eligible for a "Secret" clearance, you must have 10 years of verifiable background information. The process usually involves reference inquiries, verification of qualifications, criminal records checks, and credit checks (as required) and may require fingerprints. The appropriate security clearance is a condition of employment and it is the candidate’s or employee’s responsibility to ensure, they are able to obtain and maintain their required security level clearance to begin or continue their employment with DCC.  Failure to obtain or maintain, the appropriate level of security clearance means either the candidate or employee will not receive a job offer, the conditional offer will be rendered null and void or their employment will be terminated with cause. A thorough security clearance process will be applied to all candidates or employees considered for an appointment; this process includes inquiries, verifications and assessments regarding matters such as, but not limited to:

  • criminal record checks

  • reference checks

  • previous employment

  • open source checks

  • credit/financial status
