As the Recreation, Education, and Partnerships Manager, you will lead a high performing team of land management professionals, providing world class recreation opportunities along the southern Eastern slopes and beyond, while balancing environmental stainability and public access needs.

This busy role offers a unique opportunity direct program delivery at a regionally andoversee the implementation of the Trails Act, while helping to shape policy and business processes at a provincial scale. You’ll collaborate closely with recreation groups, various stakeholders, municipalities, Indigenous communities,NGOs, and government partners to create meaningful, lasting outcomes.

Role Responsibilities

The Recreation, Education, and Partnerships Manager is responsible for leading the implementation of the regional recreation and partnership program on Crown land. The role oversees the development and maintenance of trail systems, recreation infrastructure, stewardship initiatives, education and outreach, and a capital investment programs. Reporting to the Director of Recreation, Ecosystem, and Land Management, the manager collaborates with other regional managers to ensure integrated, outcome-focused program delivery across the region.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Implementation of the Trails Act and delivering the department recreation mandate.
  • Overseeing the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the regional operational program for Crown lands, including trail systems, infrastructure maintenance, site planning and capital investment projects.
  • Developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with volunteer stewardship groups to become Trail Managers and other partners to support recreation stewardship initiatives.
  • Designing and implementing education programs and communication strategies to inform the public and stakeholders about Crown land recreation opportunities, regulations, and safety.
  • Collaborating with internal programs (e.g., Conservation Officers, Parks, Forestry), municipalities, commercial stakeholders, and Indigenous communities to ensure integrated land management and address resource conflicts.
  • Keeping safety and wellness at the forefront of the work and team.
  • Mentoring, coaching, and supporting the Recreation, Education, and Partnerships team, fostering a safe, effective, and high-performing work environment.
  • Contributing to branch-wide business planning, financial oversight, emergency response, and policy development to ensure smooth and efficient program delivery.
  • Ensuring  compliance with relevant legislation, including the Trails Act, Public Lands Act, and Public Land, to regulate and manage public land recreation access and activities.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Completed university degree (4 years) in resource management, environmental sciences, environmental or natural resource law, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 6 years of directly related experience, including senior leadership roles.


Equivalency: Related education or experience may be considered on a one-for-one basis.

Assets:

  • Knowledge of outdoor recreation management and practice, especially on a multi-use land base.
  • Demonstrated experience providing leadership to teams in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment.
  • Strong conflict resolution and negotiation skills, with the ability to navigate sensitive issues and competing interests.
  • Ability to manage budgets including strategic planning and fiscal responsibility.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport and work effectively with diverse stakeholders, including Indigenous communities, government partners, and non-governmental organizations.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Familiarity with Alberta’s Crown land legislation, and relevant land management plans.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience preparing briefing materials and communicating effectively with leadership.

Notes

  • This position has historically been located in Calgary, but other locations in the South Region will be considered.
  • Monday – Friday, 7.25 hours per day / 36.25 hours per week.
