We have an exciting opportunity for a Hydrogeologist who is passionate about protecting our province’s water resources. In this role, you’ll provide environmental management expertise to support the maintenance and construction of provincial infrastructure, ensuring projects are sustainable and pose minimal risk to the environment.

Primary Accountabilities

As a Hydrogeologist, you will play a key role in protecting provincial water resources by either conducting or procuring a wide range of professional hydrological, hydrogeological, geological, geochemical and geotechnical services.  You will also investigate and resolve complaints under the Environment Act. Examples of investigations may include contamination due to underground storage tanks, highway de-icing salt, organic and inorganic contaminants and acid drainage, well water loss due to construction and blasting, and seepage problems due to ground water pressure and movement.

You will provide comprehensive contract administration and project management services to support environmental projects including preparing calls for proposal/terms of reference for environmental studies or permitting and managing consultant contracts. You will lead the Monitoring Program for all Provincial onsite water supplies and provide technical support to maintain regulatory compliance.

This opportunity requires extensive contact with professional and technical staff within the department, as well as other departments, governments, industries, contractors, and the public. Occasional travel within the province is required.

Qualifications and Experience

You have a Bachelor of Science in Geology or Earth Science, or a Bachelor of Engineering in an applicable discipline. You have a general knowledge of geotechnical engineering, geology, hydrology, geochemistry, hydrogeology and/or water resources evaluation, development and protection procedures. Formal training and experience in modern quantitative and qualitative water resource management and environmental protection is desirable.

You have a valid driver’s license in good standing, and ability to travel throughout the province.

You are a highly-motivated team player with demonstrated ability to work both independently and as an effective team player. You are comfortable in both office and field environments. You demonstrate the ability to research, investigate, design and implement all necessary mapping, research, investigative and testing programs.

You are knowledgeable in project management procedures, including contract administration, phased construction, project scheduling and cost control, and on-site inspection and project supervision. You possess a working knowledge of environmental regulations, industry practices and safe work practices. You have exceptional attention to detail and are accurate in your work. A high standard of verbal and written communication skills is essential when working with a diversity of stakeholders.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.
