Assisted Living and Social Services (ALSS) helps provide stability and security for vulnerable Albertans, including seniors, people with disabilities, low-income individuals and those facing homelessness, while also providing opportunities to foster independence and quality of life. This includes supporting the delivery of preventive programming and helping Albertans access disability services, homelessness supports, financial assistance and employment services, seniors supports and other social-based programs. Role Responsibilities

The Strategic Projects & Engagement Coordination (SPEC) units purpose is to strengthen the capacity within the branch of Common Service Delivery (CSD) to plan, develop and implement priority on-boarding and strategic initiatives. Part of the Employment & Financial Services (EFS) Portfolio, the SPEC unit brings strong project development and management to CSD. This strengthens the branch’s capacity to successfully manage and execute projects that drive efficiency, foster continuous improvement, and promote innovation in service delivery.

Reporting to the SPEC Supervisor, the Project Coordinator leads the design, management, and evaluation of major projects and cross-ministry initiatives.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead and participate in complex projects and cross-ministry initiatives.
  • Analyze internal processes and operational policies
  • Identify opportunities for improvement and develop strategic recommendations
  • Prepare high-quality communications and presentations, including briefing materials.
  • Coordinate updates and progress tracking for strategic plans.
  • Represent the branch on interdepartmental teams, external committees, and working groups.
  • Conduct comprehensive research and stakeholder consultations.
  • Support the implementation of new technologies that enhance service delivery.
  • Coordinate onboarding of services transitioning to CSD.
  • Support reporting and training initiatives, developing reports and designing and facilitating training, when needed.

  • Works with program business areas to clarify and define their role and any given priority project for the most effective approach to meeting branch outcomes.
  • Quantifies and qualifies impacts of potential projects to the branch’s short, medium, and long- term outcomes and recommends the most effective course for achievement.
  • Identifies risks and issues that may affect the successful execution of projects to the attention of the program areas, and management and participates in the mitigation and solution building for these risks and issues.
  • Ability to operate effectively within a complex organization and continually changing business environment. 

Building Collaborative Environments

  • Leads the sharing of expertise between the corporate services areas and the program areas throughout the project life cycle to ensure the best project and ministry outcomes.
  • Ensures ongoing communication is maintained between the unit and management by facilitating regular decision-making meetings regarding projects.
  • Leads the unit to achieve the desired outcomes and participates as an effective team member.
  • Effectively resolves issues and influence actions of others that are direct reports.
  • Collaborates with branch management team to develop recruitment, retention and succession planning strategies as key tools to ensure the availability of appropriate knowledge and skills.


Creative Problem Solving
 

  • Leads meetings with stakeholders to solve complex problems and provide recommendations relating to the implementation and continuous improvement of project best practices in CSD. 
  • Stays abreast of the current project best practices and change literature and brings forward innovations to leadership.
  • Able to work with ambiguity in a complex and changing strategic environment, under pressure and using sound judgement, tact and diplomacy.
  • Comfortable with immediately responding to emerging issues and resolving crises that affect projects and stakeholders with little precedent or guidelines.

Qualifications

University degree or diploma in a related field plus 2 years progressively responsible related experience. 

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Experience coordinating strategic and concurrent projects is highly valued. Certification in Project Management and/or Business Analysis is considered an asset.

This position requires an extensive knowledge and understanding of:

  • Project management principles, methodologies, and tools.
  • Government strategic priorities, ministry operations, and decision-making frameworks.
  • Alberta’s social-based assistance legislation, programs, and services.
  • Business tools, including Microsoft 365 (SharePoint, Teams, OneDrive, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), MS Project, Planner, Visio, Power BI, and internet-based research.

This competition will be used to fill 1 full-time permanent position. The position is remote and the successful candidate can be located anywhere within Alberta.
