The Senior Manager, Domestic Taxation contributes to the overall success of the Global Taxation team in Canada, ensuring the fulfillment of the compliance and financial reporting functions with respect to income taxes compliance for certain domestic subsidiaries of Scotiabank and related entities, including assisting Director Domestic Taxation Reporting & Advisory and VP Domestic Taxation as needed with related tax advisory activities.  In addition, this role will also provide support on tax related matters that impact the Bank’s operating activities.

 

The Senior Manager, Domestic Taxation ensures that all tax initiatives and responsibilities are executed in support of the Bank’s business strategies and objectives and that all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, and internal policies and procedures.


Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:

 

  • Lead and manage all aspects of Canadian direct tax compliance as it relates to certain domestic subsidiaries and related entities as needed:
    • Prepare/review of monthly/quarterly/annual income tax provision and the annual provision-to-return reconciliation and supporting working papers.
    • Prepare/review of the reconciliation of current tax, deferred tax and capital tax balance sheet accounts on a quarterly basis.
    • Prepare/review monthly income tax and capital tax instalments.
    • Prepare/review of annual federal and provincial income and capital tax returns to ensure the completeness and accuracy of the returns for filing on a timely basis.
    • Manage the annual audit of the domestic subsidiaries’ tax provision by the external auditors, including providing supporting tax working papers and responding to queries on a timely basis.
    • Ensure compliance with all federal and provincial tax laws and regulations.
    • Monitor changes to legislation and inform stakeholders of such changes as necessary.
    • Support Global Tax Accounting initiatives including Mandatory Disclosure Rules.
    • Support Global Audit Risk Reporting including TLR.
    • Assist other members of the domestic tax team on ad-hoc issues and projects, as needed.
  • Position requires working closely with certain stakeholders (discussed below) to champion a customer focused culture:
    • Assist the senior members of the domestic tax team in managing the relationships with government auditors, including the preparation/communication of technical analysis to support the filing positions taken and assisting in the conclusion of various Federal and provincial income tax/capital tax audits.
    • Manage the execution, maintenance and proper documentation of controls and processes around the tax functions in relation to the domestic subsidiaries’ income tax provision and returns, including but not limited to SOX, and establish strong working relationships with various internal stakeholders (e.g. Finance, SOX, Accounting Policy).
    • Assist in providing resolution on complex tax matters affecting the domestic subsidiaries through research and interpretation of tax law, including assistance as needed with corporate reorganizations, tax planning initiatives and tax advisory activities.
    • Liaise with and build relationships with managers and staff of Scotiabank stakeholders for entities.
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
    • Research and advise business partners on operational tax issues as needed.
    • Manage internal SOX documentation and processes and design processes ensuring best practices are built in to everyday practices.
    • Assist other members of the domestic tax team on ad-hoc issues and projects, as needed.
  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:

  • Professional accounting designation (CPA - CA, CPA – CGA, or CPA - CMA) and completion of CPA in-depth tax course (all levels).
  • Minimum of 8 years of related tax experience, preferably in a financial institution.
  • Strong tax technical knowledge and experience in corporate tax return preparation and review.
  • Strong understanding of tax accounting under IFRS IAS 12 and experience in tax provision preparation and review.
  • Experience in dealing with government tax auditors.
  • Experience in dealing with operational tax issues including tax reporting and registered plans.
  • Excel in communication skills – both written and oral.
  • Strong tax research and analytical skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills (i.e. proven ability to multi-task and work effectively and efficiently under tight timelines).
  • Proactive learner and self-starter with proven ability to work well independently and in a team environment; and
  • Open mindedness to using technology to improve efficiency and effectiveness of tax processes.
  • Working knowledge of Longview’s tax provision module is desirable.
