Role Responsibilities

Each day in Alberta, more than two million people go to work and fuel Alberta's economic engine. The Labour Policy Unit provides advice on workforce policy and leads the design of programs to build Alberta’s workforce.
 

Reporting to the Manager, Program Policy and Design, the Policy Analyst will have the opportunity to:

1. Undertake research and analysis on workforce and related programming to promote an understanding of issues and trends, identify opportunities and generate implementable solutions.
2. Contribute to the development and design of workforce programs by producing and evaluating options and recommendations that are well-researched, evidence-informed, integrates stakeholder perspectives, and clearly present information to enable senior officials to make effective decisions. 
3. Support strategic policy initiatives to inform and guide direction setting on workforce programming, ensuring Alberta’s workforce investments align with strategic priorities and labour market needs.
4. Prepare briefings notes, papers, reports, as well as draft responses to inquiries from government officials, stakeholders and the general public.

Qualifications

University graduation in a related field plus 2 years progressively responsible related experience.

One year of degree for one year of education and vice versa will be considered as equivalent.

Knowledge and assets required:

• Experience conducting research, collect data and information using a variety of resources to undertake effective policy analysis.
• Experience generating qualitative analysis, interpreting and integrating literature reviews, environmental scanning and stakeholder perspectives to apply to policy analysis.
• Ability to generate analysis using quantitative data such as labour market data, program and evaluation data and apply results to program policy.
• Abilitiy to synthesize, summarize and clearley present analysis that incorporates many different sources and perspectives.
• Problem-solving skills to identify issues and develop solutions and recommendations for action. Ability to think conceptually and critically.
• Ability to generate well-analyzed and realistic policy options and recommendations on complex issues.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate with a variety of audiences.
• Experience preparing documents, reports and briefings to provide advice or recommendations.
• Organization and time management skills to balance multiple ongoing projects and meet deliverables on tight timelines.
• Effective collaboration and interpersonal skills to build positive working relationships amongst a diverse group of colleaues to achieve project outcomes.
• Knowledge of government processes for policy formation or legislation development, Alberta’s labour force and economic trends and issues, and policy or program development.

Notes

There is one full-time temporary position (12 months) working 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Working location is Commerce Place Building, Edmonton
