Mandate

As a member of the Fixed Income and Derivatives team, the Associate reports to the Head of Fixed Income, Commodity and Currencies, Institutional Sales in Montreal and provides clients with coverage, including firm research and sales/ trading (buy/sell) merchandise.  The Associate is expected to maximize profit based on customer flow and experience while minimizing bank risk and adhering to position and loss limits as designed by Trading Products LOB Head.  This position is expected to work closely with Fixed Income and Derivatives team in supporting customer business.

Knowledge and Skills 

Knowledge:

  • Four-year college or university degree in Accounting/Economics/Mathematics/Statistics, CFA or Master Degree is a plus
  • 2-5 years of industry related experience
  • Working knowledge of financial markets with previous exposure to the financial markets and/or analysis gained through a combination of work and educational qualifications is required.
  • Thorough knowledge of  financial market, pricing, and trading/hedging strategies and familiarity with a variety of the field’s concepts, practices and procedures
  • Basic understanding of  trading or sales procedures and broader regulatory and financial concepts

  • Ability to prioritize competing responsibilities working in a fast-paced, highly pressured work environment
  • Strong focus on meeting client needs
  • Ability to discern trading desk dynamics

Key Accountabilities

Client Support and Relationship Management

  • Must provide competitively priced liquidity to corporate, institutional, and interbank clients.  Must be able to provide quotes, hedging advice, and market information in support of the customer business and arbitrage opportunities.
  • Support sales activities with trading strategies, definition and market information customized to suit their client’s individual needs.  Will be available to accompany all sales staff to assist with client calls, presentations, and seminars.
  • Beyond assisting sales staff to increase client volumes, the role must actively market financial institutions to increase order flow, volume and market information
  • Develop and leverage relationships across LOBs, with executive and external clients to foster and support intra-group coordination while carrying out accountabilities.

Transaction Management

  • Assist senior staff in the research and resolution of administrative/operational issues
  • Aid senior staff with the presentation of information and prepare proposals for their review
  • Maintain and develop knowledge of client systems/applications, including I-star and our internal web-based research document database
  • Receive transaction and inspect form to ensure accuracy of information.
  • Execute orders for purchase or sales of securities or completes transaction independently if brokerage firm is market maker in requested transaction.  All transactions must be recorded accurately and frequently reviewed for accuracy.
  • Reviews all transactions to ensure that transactions conform to the regulations of SEC, NASD, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Track supply and demand and evaluate market development.

Risk Management

  • Responsible for the prudent management of the Bank’s exposure.  Must operate within position and loss limits as set forth by Trading Products LOB Head
  • Manage risk related to pricing and trading of the book.
  • Manage firm’s risk exposure on the existing book.
  • Take action to reduce risk, including the development of hedging and trading strategies.

Marketing Knowledge

  • Develop strong market knowledge in order to provide comprehensive service to clients, develop new solutions, and construct compelling recommendations.
  • Read, analyze and interpret common technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents to better serve client needs.
  • Use analytical skills (probability, statistical inference, concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions) and be able to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

Authorities

Advisory: Under guidance, this role provides sales or trading suggestions and information to clients.

Information Access: Authority to use and access confidential information related to product and financial information.

Veto: Authority to stop something from happening because of significant compliance and risk exposure.

The salary range for this position is CAD $110,000 to $120,000.

Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
