Facilitates risk management and growth initiatives for the Commercial Bank while managing portfolio level credit risk within a large, diversified portfolio of commercial banking clients, working closely with the business to ensure that credit risk is appropriately assessed, monitored, and managed in line within the Bank’s risk appetite and regulatory requirements. This role is essential in balancing revenue generation with prudent risk-taking. By working closely with the business, the portfolio manager ensures that risk-adjusted returns are optimized, and credit losses are avoided.

  • Monitors and manages credit exposure across a large portfolio of commercial clients.
  • Tracks portfolio performance, credit quality, and exceptions and generates risk reporting.
  • Identifies portfolio risks (industry, product, geographic) and proposes mitigation strategies.  
  • Advises on sales and risk management strategies based on a deep understanding of the market, relevant industry verticals, market competitors, client needs and business growth opportunities.
  • Analyses trends to identify concentrations or emerging risks and opportunities.
  • Operates at a group/enterprise-wide level and serves as a specialist resource to senior leaders and stakeholders.
  • Makes recommendations to senior leaders on strategy and new initiatives, based on an in-depth understanding of the business/group.
  • Presents insights to senior leaders or risk committees.
  • Provides strategic input into business decisions and acts as a risk partner to commercial bankers.
  • Helps implement credit policy changes and portfolio strategies.
  • Conducts independent analysis and assessment to resolve tactical and strategic issues.
  • Recommends business priorities, advises on resource requirements and develops roadmap for strategic execution.
  • Networks with industry contacts to gain competitive insights and best practices.
  • Coordinates the management of databases and dashboards; ensures alignment and integration of data in adherence with data governance standards.
  • Leads change management programs of varying scope and type.
  • Tracks implementation requests to keep the process on track with timelines.
  • Tracks internal reports and recommends improvements to support materials based on findings and feedback.
  • Provides research and data gathering to facilitate solutions to the businesses and its needs.
  • Applies expertise and thinks creatively to address unique or ambiguous situations and to find solutions to problems that can be complex and non-routine.
  • Implements changes in response to shifting trends.
  • Broader work or accountabilities may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Typically, 7+ years of relevant experience and post-secondary degree in related field of study or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills - In-depth / Expert

  • Strong credit analysis and financial modeling experience
  • Knowledge of commercial banking products
  • Familiarity with loan structures, covenant tracking, and collateral types
  • Familiarity with regulatory frameworks
  • Experience with credit risk rating systems and portfolio management tools
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant industry verticals and market’s competitive environment
  • Experience in negotiations
  • Experience with Sales Strategy and Sales referral process development

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
