The Regional Jury Officer supports the Court of King’s Bench in the facilitation of jury trials. The Jury Officer participates in the jury selection process and in supporting selected members of the jury throughout the trial. This position is required to deal with multiple stakeholders, including the Judiciary, Counsel, Sheriffs, other law enforcement agencies and Court Operation employees.
The Jury Officer position is required to provide and maintain a safe and secure setting for all jury members within the various Court of King’s Bench locations and other locations as deemed appropriate by Court and Justice Services. Work is performed in an ever-changing environment, with a requirement to provide a specialized oversight necessary for the Court of King’s Bench. Additionally, new and ongoing training is essential in responding to the various aspects required in a jury trial.
A Jury Officer is required to follow specific guidelines for all jury members within the above-mentioned court facilities (and other court or inquiry venues) by providing a presence in courtrooms and in public areas outside of courtrooms. This is essential in ensuring that policies are adhered to, including escorting juries while sequestered.
Flexibility is crucial in this role, as overtime may be required with little or no notice, to meet operational demands. The role also involves travel to court locations across Alberta to support jury trials. During deliberations, the jury may need continuous support from the jury officer, which could include overnight stays. A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle are essential for fulfilling these responsibilities.
This position works on a part-time casual basis and only required during jury trials. Jury Trials can vary in length and frequency.
