The Capacity Engineer Staff resolves a variety of data management, design, and drawing issues for Data Center installations within a moderate scope.  The primary focus of this roll will be the creation, interpretation, and distribution of CFD models in support of business activities. Prior Knowledge Engineering Familiar with vapor-compression refrigeration cycle and its application in mechanical HVAC design Basic understanding of sensible and latent heat, including their associated thermodynamics equations Knowledgeable in mechanical systems including ACUs/RTUs, CRAH/CRAC units, IDECs, Chillers, Cooling Towers and Liquid Cooling Familiar with HVAC controls systems, including setpoint strategies, sequence of operations and Control logic Understanding system redundancy and failure scenarios Foundational ability to interpret mechanical, electrical and architectural design documents preferred Prior knowledge of ASHRAE standard 90.4 preferred Prior experience in Data Center mechanical engineering design or operations is preferred Responsibilities Computational Fluid Dynamics Creates CFD models in support of regular sales activities, project justifications, and for troubleshooting of thermal issues arising within our facilities Works collaboratively with peers to perform reviews of models built by others and provide constructive feedback  Mechanical Engineering Evaluate mechanical design plans and identify potential cooling limitations Implement solutions to existing thermal management challenges Develop datacenter floor zoning plans to ensure efficient infrastructure planning. Assists Capacity Engineers with assessment of high-power density customer deployments Review impact of containment walls and privacy screens on facility cooling system performance Completes Power Utilization Effectiveness (PUE) calculations for facilities with input from Capacity Engineers and Site Operations Space Planning & Design Creates standard Cage-Cabinet design options that respond to moderate customer requirements, Equinix requirements and physical site constraints Prepares notional Cage-Cabinet layouts, area calculations and diagrams for each individual standard data center within a moderate scope                                                       Maximizes space utilization to develop the best design solution for the data center and the customer Engineering Utilizes developed knowledge of electrical/mechanical infrastructure to notionally attribute standard Cage-Cabinet designs against data center infrastructure within a moderate scope Utilizes developing skills in preparing high-density review cases Works with more senior members in the validation and updating of data center infrastructure data within capacity systems Problem Solving Solves standard, cross-functional issues that span multiple groups Uses developing skills to identify and understand underlying issues Understands when and to whom to escalate Data & Drawing Management Works with site operations to address discrepancies with documentation of facility infrastructure and installation of customer cages within a moderate scope Ensures that AutoCAD drawings and capacity systems correctly represent existing status of the data center within a moderate scope Identifies and make corrections as necessary Identifies and leads the investigation of moderate data issues with the support of senior staff Produces developed drawings and space plans for use by Sales, Site Operation and other teams Creates spatial layouts of each customer cage which are used by the other capacity teams for their reviews, and by the Sales Engineers and site teams for customer installations Drawing and inventory preparation, which may be reviewed by more senior members Creates numbering plans for new sites, compiling inventory list, and preparing the drawings files used to track assignments Compiles as-built underground utility drawings as required to create a comprehensive record drawing for each site within a moderate scope Collaboration Collaborates with various teams to identify any power/cooling issues that affect space capacity Answers standard inventory-related questions from cross-functional departments Ability to engage and gather input from appropriate stakeholders to reach the right solution for the company and the customer within a moderate scope Where planning decisions are in dispute between sales and operational needs, the engineer is expected to escalate to the right level May require supervision in answering more complex questions Capacity Feasibility & Optimization Works with Capacity and/or site engineers to identify power and cooling limitations, discuss potential modifications, and develop moderate solutioning Acts as a backup point of contact for the capacity review process to ensure that space is being assigned maximizes the value of our data centers by optimizing the efficiency of our space within a moderate scope May require supervision for more complex solutions Qualifications Demonstrated data center capacity engineering experience is required Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software Cadence Reality DC/6Sigma Room preferred Equinix is committed to ensuring that our employment process is open to all individuals, including those with a disability.  If you are a qualified candidate and need assistance or an accommodation, please let us know by completing this form.
