Our client in the financial services industry is looking for a Manager of Underwriting to join their team in Toronto. This is a full-time permeant role that is hybrid (in office 3 days a week) and offers 3 weeks vacation, a full benefits package, and a bonus structure.
The Manager, Underwriting leads a team of mortgage underwriting professionals responsible for reviewing and approving residential mortgage applications. The role focuses on assessing risk, ensuring decisions meet quality and service standards. The manager also supports the growth of the mortgage portfolio in alignment with overall business objectives.
Roles and Responsibilities
Lead, coach, and develop a team of underwriters to ensure high performance and adherence to service standards.
Monitor productivity and support the team in making quality credit decisions.
Recommend and implement process improvements.
Provide regular feedback, foster collaboration, and ensure alignment with department goals and financial targets.
Promote a culture of service excellence and operational efficiency.
Review and verify mortgage applications for accuracy, completeness, and risk, in line with internal underwriting guidelines and delegated authority.
Take corrective action based on file audits and reviews to uphold decision-making standards.
Ensure compliance with privacy laws, anti-money laundering, anti-fraud policies, and regulatory obligations.
Collaborate with sales and operations teams to streamline the mortgage application and funding process.
Manage escalations and ensure timely, professional communication with internal and external stakeholders.
Other duties as required.
Qualifications and Skills
A degree or diploma in a relevant field; additional certifications are an asset.
3–5 years of experience leading a team in mortgage underwriting.
Strong understanding of residential lending products and underwriting practices.
Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
