This includes providing services and resources to protect children and youth from abuse and neglect and effectively addressing harm that has placed them in need of intervention. Mentoring and support services are available to youth transitioning into healthy, productive adults. Provincial Campus Based Care (PCBC) centres across the province offer 24/7 trauma-informed care and secure services for vulnerable youth (ages 12-17 receiving child intervention services) and their families. PCBCs integrate best practices to help youth reach their potential and address emotional and behavioural therapeutic needs.

PCBCs goal is for youth to return to a less intensive form of care, become independent or return to their families. PCBCs encompass several programs to support youth such as Indigenous/cultural supports, recreation therapy services, on-site schools, medical services, transition and connection services, addiction support, occupational therapy and access to facility dogs.

Role Responsibilities

Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of vulnerable youth? Do you feel called to this important and meaningful work? If so, the Lac la Biche Provincial Campus Based Care (PCBC) Centre invites you to apply for the Recreation Therapist position.

PCBC centres value the unique perspectives, cultural knowledge and experiences that Indigenous peoples, including the youth the centre serves. At all centres, PCBC actively works to create a culturally safe and supportive environment for Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth.

Reporting to the Recreation Therapy Supervisor, the Recreation Therapist’s primary goal is to educate, restore, maintain and support the recovery of youth, enhancing their quality of life and empowering informed decision-making. You will create an environment that fosters growth and development, providing opportunities for community access, meaningful activities, inclusive culture awareness and support within the PCBC centres.

As a Recreation Therapist, you will be responsible for designing and delivering programs for youth in residence, offering recreational advice and guidance to both staff and youth at the centre. If you’re ready to make a positive impact, we would love to hear from you!

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Create and monitor individual recreation plans for youth, including assessments, goal setting and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Develop and implement recreation programs to youth, offering engagement opportunities daily.
  • Collaborate with community partners to offer youth opportunities for recreational activities both on and offsite.
  • Deliver ongoing, evidence-based education in Therapeutic Recreation to all PCBC staff - including wage, permanent, temporary and leadership team members – to support best practices and enhance service delivery across PCBC centres.
  • Contribute to policy development and implementation while ensuring the coordination of services.
  • Prepare reports, contact notes and other administrative tasks related to youth recreation activities on a weekly and monthly basis, and attend meetings with supervisors, child and youth care staff, and other clinical team members to discuss concerns, provide feedback, and share recommendations.

PCBC values the unique perspectives, cultural knowledge and experiences that Indigenous peoples, including the youth the centre serves. At all centres, PCBC actively works to create a culturally safe and supportive environment for Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth.
