Role Responsibilities

The Terrestrial Invasive Species and Feral Horse Management Coordinator (TISC) is a subject matter expert who plays a key strategic and operational leadership role within the Rangeland Stewardship and Progams Unit. Reporting to the Rangeland Stewardship and Programs Manager and supporting the Director of Rangeland Stewardship and Land Use Policy, the TISC is responsible for leading the delivery, coordination, and stakeholder engagement for both the Terrestrial Invasive Species Program and the Feral Horse Management Framework. This position operates with a high level of autonomy and contributes to cross-ministry collaboration and strategic initiatives to support the Division’s and Department’s overall mandate.

Key Responsibilities Include:

• Leading the development, implementation, and oversight of the Terrestrial Invasive Species Program and the Feral Horse Management Framework, while providing strategic and operational guidance with significant independence.
• Building partnerships with municipalities and non-governmental organizations; hiring and managing seasonal weed crews; monitoring program activities; managing budgets; and leading training and annual reporting on invasive species management.
• Coordinating feral horse population surveys, ecological monitoring projects, fertility control initiatives, and stakeholder engagement efforts; managing FOIP requests, overseeing data storage, and ensuring timely and accurate public communication.
• Supporting the Director by preparing and reviewing briefings, correspondence, and strategic documents; proactively identifying emerging issues and recommending mitigation strategies aligned with departmental objectives.
• Acting as a liaison and representative for the unit in internal meetings, cross-ministry initiatives, and engagements with Indigenous communities, academic institutions, and other external stakeholders.
• Managing program resources including budgets, contracts, and grants; ensuring effective reporting and maximizing outcomes with transparency and accountability, especially under constrained resources.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in Agriculture or Science field with appropriate specialization plus a minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience. 

Eligibility for membership with the Alberta Institute of Agrologists (AIA) is required.

Equivalency: Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture or Science field with appropriate specialization, combined with seven (7) years of senior-level, directly related experience in the specialty area.

Notes

This is a full-time, permanent position located in Red Deer. Other locations including Pincher Creek, Lethbridge or Edmonton may be considered.

Monday to Friday, 7.25 hours per day, totaling 36.25 hours per week.
