The Ministry of Indigenous Relations is dedicated to advancing stronger relationships between the provincial government and Indigenous communities, organizations and people. A key focus of the Indigenous Women’s Initiatives (IWI) division is addressing violence and increasing the safety and economic security of Indigenous women, girls and two spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex and asexual plus (2S+) people through the implementation of the Alberta Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) Roadmap. This includes providing secretariat support to the Premier’s Council on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two Spirit Plus (2S+) People, and the First Nations and Métis Women’s Councils on Economic Security. The IWI division also administers the Community Support Fund (CSF) and the Alberta Indigenous Intern Program (AIIP).

Role Responsibilities

Are you passionate about supporting Indigenous communities to address violence and increase safety and economic security for Indigenous women, girls, and 2S+ people? If you have experience in program coordination, and building strong relationships across sectors, we want you on our team.

The Policy Coordinator is within the Indigenous women initiatives and reports to the IWI Manager, Council Secretariat & Alberta Indigenous Intern Program (AIIP). The role coordinates policy and programming to support the councils secretariat and AIIP operations.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Build relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, and government partners.
  • Collaborate across ministries and departments to share information and resources.
  • Monitor emerging trends and issues to inform strategies and policy.
  • Prepare reports and recommendations for senior management.
  • AIIP Program Support
    • Develop program operational policy and processes as well as annual program plan.
    • Establish program governance make mechanism for their engagement on a regular basis.
    • Develop and present regular program results and outcome.
    • Actively promote program across all ministries, post- secondary institutions and in the Indigenous community organizations

 

  • Council Seretariats Support
    • Aid in communications between secretariat and council.
    • Coordinates and support council meetings.
    • Support council recruitment and operations
    • support council annual reporting requirements

Qualifications

4 years University graduation in a related field (e.g., Indigenous relations/Native studies, Social Sciences, Women and Gender studies, or related field) plus two years related experience. 

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or  
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

 

 

Required:

  • Policy Development: Developing and analyzing policies.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with Indigenous communities, government officials, and other stakeholders.
  • Project Management: Managing projects related to Indigenous safety, economic security, and social issues, ensuring timely and successful delivery.
  • Research: Apply theoretical methods and analysis tools to real-world policy settings.
  • Written Communication: Ability to draft recommendations, research papers, presentations and other documents related to the work of the division.
  • Cross-Ministry Coordination: experience working with partner ministries and organizations to meet ministry business goals and expected outcomes.

 

Assets: 

  • Indigenous Knowledge: Indigenous histories, cultures, and the government-Indigenous relationship.
  • Government Processes: Alberta’s political environment, including decision-making within the Legislative Assembly and other government bodies.
  • Gender and Social Issues Expertise: Strategies to address violence and enhance the safety and economic security of Indigenous women, girls, and 2S+ people.

Hours of Work

  • 7.25 daily hours
  • 36.25 weekly hours
  • 8:15 AM to 4:30 PM (Monday to Friday)
