Alberta’s Emission Offset Engineer plays a critical role in supporting the province’s industrial carbon pricing and emissions trading system under the Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) Regulation. This specialized engineering role leads the coordination, development, and continuous improvement of Alberta’s emission offset system.
In this role, you will apply engineering expertise, carbon market knowledge, and technical insight into greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation, with a focus on quantification, measurement, and verification. Core responsibilities include policy development, offset project assessments, regulatory assurance processes, stakeholder engagement, and support for Alberta’s carbon credit registry.
Detailed knowledge of engineering processes, emission sources, and emission control technologies will be required to develop and evaluate emissions quantification methodologies. As well, the incumbent will need to have a strong understanding of the current Alberta industrial greenhouse gas regulation in order to be able to conduct reviews and provide recommendations that are aligned with the policy and regulatory intent of the regulation.
You will work collaboratively with internal teams and external partners to develop and evaluate offset protocols across multiple sectors, including oil and gas, agriculture, waste management, renewable energy, and other industrial sources. This role also contributes to cross-government initiatives and supports alignment with federal, provincial, and international carbon systems.

Education: University graduation in Engineering or Applied Science or Geology or Geophysics, or graduation from a recognized School of Architecture, plus five years related experience; or equivalent as described below. Eligible for membership with the APEGA or AAA.
Note: Eligibility means you have either applied to become a registered member on the APEGA website, is enrolled as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT), or has completed the requirements to become a professional APEGA member.
Equivalencies (considered on the basis of):
1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

This is a full-time, permanent position based in Edmonton, with a schedule of Monday to Friday, 36.25 hours per week.
