Role Responsibilities

Are you an experienced business intelligence & analytics professional who thrives at the intersection of data, technology, and strategic decision-making? We are seeking a results-oriented Business Intelligence Analyst to join our high-performing analytics team within Tax and Revenue Administration (TRA). This role plays a critical part in enabling data-driven decisions through both advanced reporting and applied machine learning.

 

As a Business Intelligence Analyst reporting to the Manager, Business Intelligence & Analytics, you will be responsible for delivering high-impact analytics solutions that directly inform decisions, strategies, and program effectiveness.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and automate scalable data pipelines to support analytics and machine learning across cloud and hybrid environments, with a focus on performance, reliability, and reusability.
  • Extract, cleanse, transform, and integrate structured and unstructured data from internal and external sources to enable high-quality analytics.
  • Develop robust semantic data models in Power BI using advanced DAX and Power Query (M) to support self-service analytics and governed reporting.
  • Build and operationalize machine learning models using Python or PySpark, leveraging big data platforms to support file selection, risk profiling, and program optimization.
  • Translate machine learning outputs into clear, actionable insights using explainability techniques, and present findings to both technical and business stakeholders.
  • Design and deliver interactive, decision-oriented dashboards in Power BI that align with TRA’s strategic goals, KPIs, and operational metrics.
  • Ensure compliance with Alberta’s data privacy legislation, including FOIP and PIPA, and support TRA’s standards for ethical data use, protection, and transparency.
  • Document and manage data assets, including a centralized data dictionary, metadata, and data lineage, to support governance, auditability, and reuse.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders as a trusted analytics advisor, translating business problems into data-driven questions and delivering strategic recommendations.
  • Promote data literacy and analytical best practices across the division through training, documentation, and consultative support.

 

In this role, you will apply strategic thinking, analytical depth, and sound judgment to:

 

  • Conduct advanced analysis that supports high-impact decisions.
  • Deliver clear, insight-driven reports and executive presentations.
  • Contribute to the enhancement of data systems and analytical tools.
  • Drive analytics projects from planning through to measurable outcomes.

Qualifications

A university degree in a related field (such as Business Intelligence & Analytics, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, or Statistics) with a minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible experience in related roles is required. The successful candidate will demonstrate advanced technical expertise, critical thinking, and a consistent ability to translate complex data into actionable insights that support strategic and operational decision-making.

 

Key skills and qualifications include:

 

  • Expert-level SQL proficiency, with significant experience working in Oracle or other enterprise-grade relational databases, including complex query optimization and performance tuning.
  • Extensive experience in Power BI enterprise data modeling, with advanced use of DAX and Power Query (M) to build scalable, high-performance semantic models for self-service analytics and governed reporting.
  • Proven ability to design and operationalize analytical datasets, including source integration, transformation logic, data quality enforcement, and feature engineering for both reporting and machine learning use cases.
  • Fluency in developing strategic, decision-focused dashboards and reports using Power BI, or similar tools, aligned with business workflows, KPIs, and executive reporting standards.
  • Hands-on experience deploying machine learning models into production using Python, PySpark, and relevant ML libraries, with a focus on scalability, explainability, and integration into business workflows; familiarity with MLOps practices such as model reproducibility and monitoring is an asset.
  • Applied experience building and orchestrating full-stack data pipelines in platforms such as Azure Databricks, or equivalent cloud-native environments for advanced analytics and machine learning workloads.
  • Experience with enterprise data integration and orchestration tools such as Azure Data Factory, Synapse Pipelines, Power BI Dataflows, or SSIS, with a focus on building scalable, maintainable pipelines across cloud and hybrid environments.
  • Knowledge of Alberta’s data privacy legislation, including FOIP, PIPA, and related policies governing the ethical handling, protection, and sharing of sensitive or personally identifiable information in analytics workflows.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office tools to communicate analytical insights, document solutions, and support stakeholder collaboration.

Qualifications Continued

Assets for this role include:

 

  • Formal certification or academic training in Business Intelligence & Analytics, Machine Learning, or Data Science.
  • Extensive experience in data acquisition and integration from multiple sources.
  • Proven ability to provide technical advice and analytical consultation to both technical teams and business stakeholders.
  • Experience contributing to analytics-related initiatives including project planning, cross-functional collaboration and solution delivery in a data-driven environment.
  • Familiarity with LLMs, including experience or exposure to RAG workflows, model fine-tuning, and building AI-powered agents.

 

Equivalencies of directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

 

  • Diploma in a related field with 5 years of related experience.
