Join the Government of Alberta as a Surface Material Auditor and play a key role in ensuring responsible and transparent use of surface materials from Alberta’s public lands.

This is not your average audit ‘desk job’. As a Surface Material Auditor with the Crown Land Enforcement Branch, you will be at the front line of safeguarding Alberta’s valuable natural assets—verifying that aggregate operators are fulfilling their lease reporting conditions and accurately reporting extracted materials and paying the royalties owed to the Crown.

Reporting to the Team Lead – Crown Land Audit Unit, the Surface Material Auditor impacts not only the economic returns that Albertans receive for the use of those surface materials, but also the long-term management and sustainability of public lands.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

• Leading and supporting audits of surface material extraction on public land.
• Ensuring Albertans receive fair economic return through accurate royalty reporting. 
• Assessing aggregate operators’ environmental management of their lease site to ensure sustainability and compliance with their reporting conditions.
• Creating educational resources for operators and contributing to policy improvements.
• Collaborating with our compliance field teams and those in other ministries to promote regulatory excellence.

Qualifications

Required: 

• A completed university degree in Environmental Sciences, Geology, Natural Resources, Business Administration or a related field.
• Minimum 4 years of related experience in regulatory compliance inspections, financial and/or compliance auditing.
• A completed university degree in Environmental Sciences, Geology, Natural Resources, Business Administration or a related field.
• A valid Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent) and willingness to travel (up to 25%).
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office. 
   

Equivalencies may be considered: A related two-year diploma plus 6 years of related experience. Additional related education considered in lieu of experience on basis of one year of experience for one year of education.

Assets:

• Experience in administering applicable government legislation, regulations, and policies (i.e. Public Lands Act, Public Lands Administration Regulation, Provincial Parks Act, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Water Act).
• Experience in environmental auditing, surface material reporting and/or records management.
• Experience with all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and off-highway vehicles (OHVs).
• Experience with spatial and electronic data systems, including GIS, GPS, and spatial data systems. 
• Experience working outdoors in remote locations.
• Standard First Aid and Basic CPR certification.
• Defensive driving certificate.

Notes

This competition is for two full-time temporary positions located in Edmonton. Duration – 18 months and 2 years. 

Monday – Friday, 7.25 hours per day / 36.25 hours per week.

These positions require field/outdoor work with travel of up to 25%.
