Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking an experienced Health and Safety Specialist to support the implementation of health, safety, security, and environmental strategies for large-scale infrastructure projects. This role sits within our Program Management team and collaborates closely with our project management and construction administration leads to uphold best-in-class safety standards.

This position will be based out of our Markham, Ontario office, with assignments on-site at major infrastructure project locations. You will play a key role in integrating and monitoring the implementation of safety policies and frameworks, supporting a culture of continuous improvement, and ensuring compliance with all applicable safety legislation and standards.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Support project teams in applying HSE framework across all associated workstreams.

  • Act as the primary contact for health and safety inquiries related to site operations and infrastructure project delivery.

  • Collaborate with the client to support Occupational Safety, Health & Wellbeing (OSHW) strategies and ensure consistent implementation.

  • Conduct focused functional assurance reviews to validate consistent application of safety best practices across the site.

  • Lead the rollout of transformative OSHW initiatives and ensure adoption with partner organizations and teams.

  • Maintain and update the Health, Safety & Security (HSS) Framework and guide implementation of required processes.

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive project safety documentation and training records.

  • Coordinate and track safety training requirements for project team members.

  • Conduct safety audits and inspections to assess compliance with OH&S regulations and site-specific requirements.

  • Investigate near-miss events and incidents; document root causes and assign corrective and preventative actions (CAPA).

  • Track CAPAs to ensure they are completed on time and are effective in addressing safety concerns.

  • Review and provide input on contractor safety submissions, incident investigation reports, and proposed mitigation actions.

  • Produce safety performance reports and provide input for project-level key performance indicators (KPIs).

  • Ensure accurate and timely incident reporting; collect and organize safety metrics and documentation.

  • Support development and delivery of safety-related training, presentations, and communication packages tailored to role-specific responsibilities.

  • Promote a dynamic lessons-learned culture to drive continuous improvement in project safety performance.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • In-depth knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation and regulatory frameworks.

  • Strong experience with site audits, inspections, incident investigations, and CAPA processes.

  • Proven track record of successfully implementing safety management systems on complex infrastructure or civil construction projects.

  • Effective communicator with strong written and verbal skills to support internal and external reporting needs.

  • Adept at influencing cross-functional teams and facilitating safety culture change.

  • Skilled in managing competing priorities and maintaining responsiveness in dynamic field environments.

  • Technically proficient with Microsoft Office and relevant digital safety reporting systems.

  • Tunnel or transit infrastructure experience is a strong asset.

Education and Experience

  • Diploma or certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 5 years of site-based health and safety experience in construction or industrial environments.

  • Professional designation required: CRSP, CHSC, NCSO, or equivalent.

  • Direct experience with tunnel or rail/transit projects is required.
