Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager of Labour Relations Policy and Legislation, the Labour Relations Senior Policy Analyst is responsible for advanced labour relations policy and project management work. 
 
You will be responsible for the following key activities:

1. Identify labour relations issues, trends and developments that could impact Alberta and Albertans. 

2. Research and provide policy analysis and advice on labour relations issues.

3. Manage projects related to changes to labour relations policy or legislation, including but not limited to drafting briefing  notes and cabinet reports, conducting jurisdictional scans, etc.

Agility - The incumbent must be able to demonstrate resiliency in an often-dynamic environment, where priorities and direction may shift without advance notice. The position is expected to anticipate and be responsive to change by taking appropriate actions, such as adjusting behaviors, and identifying alternate approaches and solutions.

Qualifications

University graduation in Public Administration, Political Science, or Labour Relations or in a related field, plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below. 

Equivalency: 

Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 

-  1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 
-  1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Candidates without with the required combination of years of experience and education may be considered at a lower classification and salary. 

The position requires the following skills and experience:

Skills:

-  Strong research, analysis and writing skills. 
-  Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. 
-  Good judgement and political acumen. 
-  Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
-  Excellent time management and prioritization skills.
-  Ability to adapt effectively to sudden changes in direction.

Essential Work Experience:

-  Experience in developing policy and/or legislation (note: depth, breadth and scope of experience will be considered)
-  Experience writing briefing notes, consultation summaries or other materials to support decision-making by senior leadership.
-  Experience conducting research and analysis of complex situations in order to provide recommendations

The following are considered assets to the position:

-  Experience navigating the Government approval process from inception to approval.
-  Project Management experience or training
-  Knowledge of labour relations issues and relevant legislation.
-  Experience with public engagement processes and stakeholder management.

There is one permanent full-time position, working 36.25 hours per week.

Working location is in Edmonton or Calgary.

Please provide a concrete example, along with your title at the time, the name of the organization, what made the situation complex (ex. Involving multiple stakeholders, high priority/contentious issues, etc.), and who the decision-maker(s) were.

-  Do you have knowledge of labour relations issues and relevant legislation?  Please describe your exposure to this field.

-  Please describe how you have developed and maintained your political acumen.

-  If you have experience navigating the Government approval process from inception to approval, please provide a concrete example of a time you navigated the approval process, along with your title at the time and the name of the organization.
