Executive Council supports the whole-of-government in effective strategic planning, coordinated policy development, and informed decision-making and interactions with other governments.

The Intergovernmental Relations (IGR) Branch of Executive Council coordinates Alberta’s engagement with other Canadian governments in pursuit of outcomes that enhance Alberta’s status as an equal partner in the federation and achieve a federal system that better serves Albertans’ needs. IGR is responsible for supporting the Premier’s intergovernmental agenda, missions, and meetings. To that end, IGR works with ministries to ensure a coordinated and consistent approach to intergovernmental relations. IGR also reviews and approves all of Alberta’s intergovernmental agreements to ensure they are consistent with Alberta’s goals and objectives.

The Economic and Resource Policy Unit is dedicated to central coordination of Alberta’s approach to the intergovernmental activities of ministries whose core work has an economic, environmental or resource focus.

Role Responsibilities

The Senior Intergovernmental Officer plays an important role in advancing Alberta’s intergovernmental priorities and ensuring that IGR provides timely, informed advice to elected officials and senior management within the department and across the Government of Alberta.

Economic and Resource Policy is seeking an individual with strong research, writing, analytical, and communication skills. You will be asked to monitor intergovernmental developments across Canada, analyze and disseminate information, provide strategic advice for intergovernmental meetings, and review intergovernmental agreements and correspondence. You will identify emerging issues and analyze the implications for Alberta’s overall intergovernmental priorities.

The position reports to the Director of Economic and Resource Policy. The Senior Intergovernmental Officer works closely with the the entire International and  Intergovernmental Relations (IIR) Division team and regularly liaises with staff in other ministries. The successful candidate must be able to maintain effective working relationships within and outside of the Government of Alberta.

The person who will be successful in this position will approach tasks proactively, respond to requests promptly, and take initiative to keep up-to-date with current events and issues of intergovernmental interest to Alberta.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements:

  • University graduation in a related field plus four years of progressively responsible related experience or equivalent as described below.


Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • One year of education for one year of experience; or
  • One year of experience for one year of education.

Hours of Work: 36.25 per week

The successful candidates will be evaluated on a combination of experience and education. Candidates may be asked to complete a written assessment.

This competition may be used for future vacancies at equal or lesser classifications across the Government of Alberta.
