The Department of Natural Resources is responsible for the development, management, conservation and protection of forest, parks and wildlife resources and the administration of the province's Crown land. The Regional Services Branch delivers department programs and services through an extensive network of field offices. These programs and services include forest management programs, Crown lands surveys, regional geological services, public outreach and education, planning and implementing Integrated Resource Management (IRM), hunter safety, forest fire prevention, detection and suppression, monitoring of forest insects and diseases, operation and maintenance of Provincial Parks, and resource conservation.

 

Currently, there is an Area Manager opportunity available in Queens/Shelburne.

About Our Opportunity

 

The Department of Natural Resources is seeking a dynamic Area Manager to lead program delivery in Queens/Shelburne. Through the effective leadership of staff and resources, you will be responsible for the efficient delivery of Department Programs including the management of permanent, seasonal and casual staff and associated budgets.   

 

Programs to be delivered include forest protection, parks and outdoor recreation, land administration, private and crown land management, wildlife, and field reports for integrated resource management. 

 

As Area Manager, you will be a vital member of the Regional Management Team and the work you do will help us achieve our Departmental objectives for program delivery across the Province.

Primary Accountabilities

 

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:

 

  • Managing the performance of work groups and employees by defining roles and responsibilities, monitoring service delivery progress, evaluating performance and providing feedback and ensuring consideration of collective agreement.
  • Ensuring program delivery contributes to the formulation of Departmental objectives, standards and policies to ensure the most cost-effective method of operation is used while providing a safe working environment, and safe infrastructure for the general public.
  • Ensuring Human and Financial Resources are utilized efficiently and effectively within the assigned geographic area.
  • Managing the delivery and maintaining the effectiveness of all assigned Departmental programs for natural resources management by developing and delivering comprehensive work and budget plans.
  • Leading and managing the Area through on-going development and implementation of strategic operational plans and where necessary provide recommendations to the Regional Director and Executive Director.

Qualifications and Experience


Typically, ideal candidates will have a Department recognized two year Natural Resources technical diploma as well as 7 years of experience in resource management, including administration and leadership roles. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

 

Frequent travel across the province is a component of this position; as such, a valid driver’s license is required.

 

Your proven leadership ability will be crucial to effectively work in a complex organization which is subject to continuous internal and external demands and changes. As such, you must have previous experience with:

 

  • Managing staff performance
  • Budgets and financial reporting

 

You will also have a sound understanding of the programs and services provided by the Department of Natural Resources.

 

The ability to communicate both verbally and in writing are key components of this position. You will be required to build relationships with a broad range of individuals and demonstrate leadership qualities which promote teamwork; communicating vision and fostering a safe work culture that encourages new ideas and innovative solutions.

 

You are results oriented with a high level of initiative and motivation. You have demonstrated problem solving, time management and organization abilities as well as proficiency with computers.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Equivalency

 

Equivalencies include: 

 

  • A Bachelors degree from a related field of study along with 5 years of related experience. 
  • A Masters degree from a related field of study with 3 years of related experience.

Pay Grade:  EC 12
