Position Overview

A Composite Technologist is responsible for implementing composite processes on the shop floor for the production of components from their base state. This position will be a part of the engineering department supporting production and enabling the delivery of composite components and tooling for both internal usage and as a part of product deliverables.

Responsibilities

  • Perform hands-on composite manufacturing, including vacuum infusion, wet lay-up, LRTM, and mold making.
  • Develop and refine composite manufacturing processes to improve efficiency, quality, and repeatability.
  • Work closely with engineers to translate design intent into manufacturable processes.
  • Create and maintain documentation including instructions, quality documents, bill of materials, test information, etc.
  • Design and fabricate composite molds and tooling to support production.
  • Train and mentor team members on best practices for composite manufacturing.
  • Support research and development of new composite materials, processes, and manufacturing techniques.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance quality, reduce defects, and reduce costs
  • Assist in troubleshooting production issues and implementing corrective actions.
  • Design jigs and fixtures to support the composite manufacturing process
  • Quality Control:
  • Perform quality checks using both visual inspection using various methods
  • Document quality control findings and maintain records for process improvement and compliance.
  • Additional Areas:
  • Communicate project status with team members and stakeholders
  • Completed other tasks outside of the specific composite processes as necessary to support other aspects of projects and programs
  • Complete necessary documentation for projects, and maintain operational documentation for the equipment

Qualifications

Education

  • Diploma in Design and Manufacturing Engineering Technology, or equivalents, or relevant experience

Experience

  • Preferably 5+ years of experience in composite manufacturing (preference given to experience in vacuum infusion, wet lay, LRTM, and mold making)
  • Knowledge and experience of an assortment of different resin systems, fibers, and process specific materials (Fibeglass, carbon fiber, polyester, vinylester, epoxy, gelcoat, tooling materials)
  • Proficient in CAD Software (preferably NX, but any demonstrated experience is acceptable)
  • Familiarity with technical drawings, and basic measurement tools
  • Hands on experience with trimming, finishing, and assembling composite parts
  • Ability to obtain controlled goods and security clearance
  • Strong problem-solving skills and abilities to troubleshoot process and material issues
  • A clear sense of urgency to achieve results. A “can-do”, “let’s make it happen” attitude and a focus on a positive customer experience
  • Ability to be comfortable with ambiguity to provide quick strategies that communicate and provide direction internal and external stakeholders at all levels within the organization
  • Must be able to gather, prioritize and simplify complex information skillfully in terms for appropriate audience
  • Ability to think proactively, critically and independently to make good decisions
  • Leadership skills; be visible, accessible, and approachable
  • Strong interpersonal skills, commitment to collaboration, good judgment, analytical skills, and creative problem solving
  • Strong multi-tasking and prioritization skills with a demonstrated ability to perform efficiently in a fast-paced environment with continued attention to detail
