Junior Technician

Position Overview

Calian is seeking a Junior Technician to support our client’s project through hands-on assistance with laboratory operations and testing activities.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain laboratory facilities, including general housekeeping and storage of test articles, cleanliness of equipment work areas, maintenance and minor repair of test equipment, identifying repair needs and contracted support requirements
  • Conduct laboratory test and evaluation activities such as uniaxial testing (Instron and MTS load frames), hardness and microhardness testing, heat treatment of metals, Charpy and drop tower impact testing, and microscopy/microstructure analysis for metals and non-metals
  • Prepare metallographic samples for analysis by sectioning/cutting large samples, mounting them in suitable compounds, polishing according to standard practices, and etching as needed for microstructural analysis
  • Record and report data from testing activities
  • Manage calibration requirements for laboratory test equipment
  • Participate in planning meetings related to testing and evaluation activities
  • Assist with the preparation of test reports and the drafting of test procedures
  • Manage sample/specimen intake and tracking throughout the testing and reporting phases
  • Assist with laboratory configuration, including relocating laboratory furniture and test equipment
  • Prepare and maintain inventories of test equipment and hazardous materials
  • Maintain the specifications and standards library
  • Assist with cataloguing new equipment and products

Qualifications

  • Must hold a valid Secret (Level II) Clearance with the Government of Canada
  • Must have completed a college diploma in mechanical engineering technology, material science technology, or equivalent
  • 1+ year of experience performing mechanical testing of materials including performing tensile testing, hardness testing, and following standard test methods to conduct technical testing (e.g. ASTM standards)
  • 1+ year of experience working in a mechanical testing or material testing laboratory environment
  • 1+ year of experience working performing heat treatment of metals, preparing metallographic samples, and taking microstructure images using a microscope
