Role Responsibilities

As the Director of Finance for Alberta Parks, you will play a key leadership role in shaping and guiding the organization’s financial vision, strategies, and operations. Your work will directly support long-term financial sustainability and help ensure Alberta Parks continues to provide exceptional value to Albertans.
 

The position leads the strategic management of financial priorities and issues for Alberta's provincial parks program by: 
 

  • providing information and advice on the Parks Division’s key issues, strategic program and policy initiatives, operational strategies and practices; 
  • providing direction for annual and multi-year business and budget strategies for the Alberta Parks program including:
    • budget planning, development, monitoring, forecasting and reporting, 
    • revenue management and reporting, 
    • monitoring seasonal and permanent FTE utilization,
    • capitalization of capital staff,
    • coordinating divisional input into departmental financial planning exercises, 
    • and coordinating overall financial training, processes, management and reporting in the division. 

 

The position is also accountable for the effectiveness of the division’s financial practices and operations and provides leadership to the team and field operations to ensure appropriate financial and internal controls are established and adhered to. 

 

In this role, your financial acumen and communication expertise will be instrumental in delivering core financial services. These include budgeting, financial reporting, preparing statements, forecasting, and conducting variance analyses. You’ll also be responsible for managing revenue forecasts, reconciling general ledger accounts, and preparing audit documentation.

 

Your success in this role will be driven by your ability to apply strong technical skills within the framework of government legislation, policies, and accounting standards. Equally important will be your role as a mentor—fostering a positive, inclusive, and high-performing team culture – and as a change agent as Parks Division continues to mature its financial and revenue management and reporting processes.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

 

  • University Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Commerce, (or other related program) is required, supplemented with a minimum of seven (7) years of related experience in Finance Management, and/or Program development. Professional accounting designation (CPA, or legacy designations CA,CMA, or CGA) are required.

 

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on thebasis of:
 

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

 

This position requires the following knowledge and abilities:

 

  • Effective communication skills - verbal, non-verbal, written, interpersonal and management skill.
  • Proven skills in problem solving, decision-making, and project implementation,
  • Knowledge of change management principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of related provincial, federal and municipal legislation,regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively lead a diverse team of professionals and technical experts.
  • Ability to develop new and innovative procedures, directives, and practices where none currently exist.
  • Experience in preparing complex consolidated financial statements,development of financial policies, procedures and providing related advice.
  • Experience in interpreting acts, regulations, policies and programs.
  • Experience with financial modules in ERP systems and InDesign software in order to prepare financial statements and other ad hoc financial reports.

 

Assets:

 

  • Preference will be given to candidates with more than ten-years of related work experience.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with revenue management experience 
  • Minimum recruitment standards outline the minimum education and experience required for appointment to a job classification.

Additional Position Details:

 

  • This position is a permanent, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday (8:15 am – 4:30 pm).
