Duties

Project overview
The project aims to understand and mitigate the impacts of human activities on aquatic ecosystems by measuring in situ effects of priority stressors on freshwater mussels, with a view to recommending management and conservation measures. Although the stressors affecting these mussels are known, their effects remain difficult to quantify. Over the course of three years, this project will focus on three key stressors: (1) mussel relocation, (2) sedimentation from dredging and other sediment‐depositing activities, and (3) infestation by zebra mussels.

A multidisciplinary approach will be used to study these stressor effects through a multi‐institutional/agency collaboration involving scientists from Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the University of Québec in Rimouski.

Intent of the process

We are seeking a candidate who will be responsible for the full implementation of the project, including conducting fieldwork—primarily scuba diving—performing taxonomic identification of freshwater mussels, processing specimens, carrying out comprehensive analyses of valvometry, metabolomics, and telemetry data from specialized laboratories.
