Manulife is seeking a highly motivated and expert Mainframe and Application Back-End Software Engineer to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will be responsible for analyzing, programming, testing, and maintaining large-scale backend and client-server applications. You will craft, develop, test, and detail Mainframe APIs that are used by various other teams' client applications. You will also be required to help develop, document and test .NET services which interact with these APIs. This position is primarily back-end focused and involves the knowledge of integrating with mainframe systems, cloud-based systems and databases.

Key Responsibilities:

Mainframe API and Application Development:

  • Design, develop, test, maintain Mainframe APIs using COBOL.

  • Development and maintenance of .NET Services interacting with these API’s.

  • Work across key data, rules, and transactional stacks through the entire application and system development life cycle.

  • Translate user requirements into software requirements and build code to specifications and standards from simple to moderately sophisticated software.

Agile Methodology:

  • Participate in Agile sprints and ceremonies to support rapid iteration and development.

  • Promote Agile principles and methodology.

Software Development and Testing:

  • Analyze, code, and test software components as defined by the Product Owner (PO) and team.

  • Writes clear, readable and maintainable code, takes ownership of the quality and usability of code.

  • Build and implement unit tests to ensure software functionality conforms with the functional requirements as defined by business.

  • Familiarity with mainframe systems, modern software architecture and developing APIs.

  • Review existing backend applications to identify defects and opportunities to improve performance and stability.

  • Ensure completion of any required documentation, such as design documents, API and testing documentation.

Technical Research and Strategy:

  • Research technical strategies, third-party tools, and current and new technologies to address emerging technical issues and improve development efficiency.

  • Apply principled coding practices to enable agility and delivery of high-quality code.

Collaboration and Mentorship:

  • Collaborate with team members, participate in code reviews, and share skills and methods.

  • Efficiently communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical collaborators.

What are we looking for:

  • 3+ years of experience in Mainframe application development.

  • Must have strong experience with COBOL

  • Experience with any of the following: Familiarity with DB2, CICS, VSAM, JCL, SAS, Endevor, and Control-M.

  • Must have experience with the .NET Programming language for crafting back-end applications

  • Strong foundation in design, programming, and testing in mainframe and/or client-server environments.

  • Familiar with setting up and using CI/CD pipelines

  • Nice to have experience with Java, or Z/OS connect

  • Familiar with modern software architectures, development using APIs, and scripting languages.

  • Experienced using Github, Jenkins, SNYK, SonarQube, and CI/CD Pipelines.

  • Nice to have familiarity with Azure

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; efficiently articulate technical vision, possibilities, and outcomes.

  • Collaborative attitude with the ability to work with team members, mentor, participate in code reviews, and share skills and methods.

  • Good interpersonal and problem-solving abilities that enable you to handle through creative abrasion.

Salary range is expected to be between

$75,880.00 CAD - $140,920.00 CAD
