We are looking for skilled and dedicated investigators to join our newly created Regulatory Audit and Investigation Service within the Crown Land Enforcement Branch. About the Role:
Reporting to the Crown Land Investigation Unit Team Lead, you will be the subject matter expert for land management regulatory investigations and enforcement activities within the Lands Operations Division. You will lead and support complex, often high-profile investigations related to land and range management, ensuring adherence to legislation and regulatory best practices.
In this critical role, you will:
• Conduct thorough regulatory investigations under the Public Lands Act, Forest Reserves Act, and Provincial Parks Act.
• Efficiently manage investigations from initiation to resolution, while concurrently handling multiple non-compliance files through effective workload management strategies and prioritization techniques.
• Have a strong understanding of the various compliance enforcement tools legislatively available in the regulatory environment and be able to seek out creative solutions.
• Assist in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and enforcement strategies.
• Provide specialized training and mentorship to staff across government departments.
• Collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders—including provincial lands officers, agrologists, conservation officers, and legal counsel—to ensure investigations are timely, fair, and legally sound.
Your extensive experience in legislation, investigative techniques, and complex case management will be key in handling sensitive and politically nuanced cases. This is a highly visible role where your work will directly influence Alberta’s environmental stewardship and regulatory landscape.

Required:
• A completed university degree in conservation law enforcement, natural sciences or a related field.
• Minimum 4 years of directly related regulatory experience in investigations and inspections.
• Valid class 5 driver's license or equivalent.
• Standard first aid and CPR certification.
Equivalencies may be considered: A related two-year diploma plus 6 years of related experience. Additional related education considered in lieu of experience on a one-for-one basis.
Assets:
• Extensive experience in managing complex investigations and navigating challenging enforcement cases with precision, discretion, and sound judgment.
• In-depth knowledge of regulatory compliance and enforcement practices, with a comprehensive understanding of provincial legislation and its practical application in complex operational environments.
• Experience with investigative techniques including interviewing skills, statement analysis and evidence gathering and handling techniques.
• Extensive experience in managing complex investigations and navigating challenging enforcement cases with precision, discretion, and sound judgment.
• Experience in interpreting and enforcing provincial statutes including the Public Lands Act, Forest Reserves Act, and Provincial Parks Act, with a strong ability to apply legislative knowledge in field operations and compliance activities.
• Experience operating Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs) in rugged and remote wilderness environments with a strong understanding of safety protocols.

This competition is for three full-time permanent positions located in North West, North East and Central Alberta.
Monday – Friday, 7.25 hours per day / 36.25 hours per week.
