The Alberta Office of Statistics and Information (OSI) is a branch within the Economic and Fiscal Policy division in Treasury Board and Finance. The OSI is Alberta's statistical agency and the Statistical Focal Point for Statistics Canada.

Role Responsibilities

As a Statistical Analyst in Alberta’s Office of Statistics and Information (OSI), you will be at the forefront of analyzing data that informs key decisions across the province. Reporting to the Manager, Statistical Services, you will support the operations of the OSI through advanced statistical analysis, data manipulation, and modeling. By leveraging your expertise in software such as SAS, R, STATA, and Python, you will generate reliable and accurate statistical data that supports policy development, planning, and decision-making. You will collaborate with internal stakeholders and play a vital role in providing evidence-based analysis to support government programs and initiatives.  


Your primary responsibility will be to conduct comprehensive research and statistical analysis, providing valuable insights for Ministry staff and decision-makers. You will analyze socio-economic data from sources like Statistics Canada and national databases, synthesizing it to inform program policy, design models, and measure the impact of policy changes. You will also work with colleagues across departments to ensure that data is effectively integrated into decision-making processes, and that performance indicators are established for accountability frameworks.  


In addition to analysis, you will develop statistical reports and presentations that inform stakeholders about trends, policies, and program outcomes. You will prepare technical documentation, ensure data quality, and collaborate with other branches to define data quality standards and eliminate redundancies. Through stakeholder consultations, you will offer expert advice on appropriate research methodologies and support the government in building efficient, automated processes for data analysis. This role also involves preparing briefing notes for senior leadership, providing insights that influence policy direction, and assisting stakeholders in maximizing the value of socio-economic data.

Qualifications

A university degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Econometrics, or a closely related field. A degree in a relevant discipline such as statistics, economics or data science, with at least 3 years of experience in developing statistical models and analysis, will be highly regarded. 


Candidates should have proficiency in data analytics and programming languages, particularly SAS, R, and Python as well as familiarity with Statistics Canada datasets and other national datasets. 
Experience with data visualization tools such as Power BI and SAS Visual Analytics is preferred.  

Masters degree is a preference. 


Preferred candidates will have demonstrated experience working with economic, financial, or statistical models and possess scripting skills for automating processes. Familiarity with data from Statistics Canada and other national databases, along with knowledge of the Alberta economy, is an asset. Experience in analyzing socio-economic trends and creating comprehensive reports for government or business stakeholders will be highly beneficial. Strong project management skills, the ability to handle tight deadlines, and excellent interpersonal communication abilities are crucial for this role.

Notes

This is a permanent, full-time position working 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.


Currently, the Government of Alberta offers a hybrid work schedule that employees can choose to work from home for two days per week. Employees working from home must be working from an Alberta location. This position will be located in the Queen Elizabeth II (formerly Federal Building) in Edmonton. 


Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary. This competition may be used to fill future roles at the same or lower classifications.

Candidates may be asked to participate in a written assessment prior to the interview.
